Wednesday, 10 December, 2008. Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Billabong Pipeline Masters, Banzai Pipeline, North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii.
ASP World No. 4 Joel Parkinson (Coolangatta, Gold Coast, Aus) (pictured) blew his competitors out of the water at the Billabong Pipeline Masters today, posting a perfect 20.00 two-wave heat score (out of 20.00) which included two perfect 10-point rides to defeat local standout Dusty Payne (Haw) during round 3.
Parkinson’s textbook tube-riding saw him thread cleanly in and out of two long Backdoor barrels (right breaking wave at Pipeline) which rendered even Payne’s near perfect 9.33 score insignificant. Parkinson marched on into round 4 while Payne was eliminated from the event.
The Billabong Pipeline Masters is the final stop on the ASP Men’s World Tour and includes 64 surfers, 40 of which are ASP World Tour competitors, the rest of the field is comprised of five replacement surfers, three event nominated wildcards, 14 Pipeline specialists, one Tahitian invitee and one Vans Triple Crown contender. The event provides the last opportunity for ASP World Tour surfers to cement their spot on the 2009 ASP World Tour.
