Depth of Speed was born from a desire of story, travel and a love of anything automotive related. Next year my wife and I will be taking to the streets to uncover and document the greatest stories from the automotive world. From coast-to-coast and from top to bottom, finding the best stories will take the highest priority. Every time I meet someone new or attend an event I’m amazed at the depth, passion and love that the automotive world brings. Depth of Speed is just that – an in-depth look at these stories. There is something about motors and machines, that to an outsider looking in, would make us seem plain crazy.

We have begun the process of outfitting our trusty Scamp trailer to traverse the entire country. Known affectionately as a fiberglass egg, our Scamp will be our home for one year of our lives. At only 13 feet long it will make for a cozy year.

Ogilvy & Mather New York and Joshua Liner Gallery unveil a series of commissioned murals by celebrated artist Stephen Powers that reinterpret the words and quotes of agency founder David Ogilvy.

Power’s bold graphic style, reminiscent of vintage advertising illustrations puts a unique emphasis on famous Ogilvy sayings and transforms them into actionable words designed to inspire the viewer. Painted in bright colors on the North stairwell of the agency’s headquarters office, the murals run from the first to the 11th floor of the office building.

The murals are being unveiled to coincide with the 100th birthday of David Ogilvy, one of the most influential and important figures in modern advertising.

During a research trip to China back in 2008 Shane Kohatsu, Nike’s Innovation Lead for Basketball, noticed local ballers were wearing everything from running shoes to hiking boots. The game in China is predominantly played outside in hot, humid conditions and the courts are made of unforgiving asphalt, so naturally, they were picking their footwear to deal with their environments. In some cases the running shoe’s breathability helped in the stifling conditions and for others the strength of their hiking shoes meant their footwear would last on the blacktop.

Shane, and his colleagues in Nike’s Innovation Kitchen, thought they could help these athletes by combining the best of those two worlds. Their solution was to take three materials and fuse them together into one material, to create a shoe that was off the charts in strength, yet allowed for a precise placement of mesh for breathability.

Hyperfuse was soon adopted by other sport categories at Nike. Ben Shaffer, the innovation lead of Nike Sportswear was drawn to the way the technology absorbed color and the beauty of the depth of the multiple layers. Huey Le has made a name for himself around the Central Florida scene & the 8th gen Civic forums as “that one guy who always has new wheels at every show” – Well after the Civic was sold – Huey picked up an S2000 and quickly did work (Mind you this car was completely stock like 2 months ago). His first set of wheels were chrome Work VS-XX’s – but he wasn’t happy with the fitment – so he got rid of those and went back to his roots – BBS Rs’s. Team V2LAB – Represent.

Prime 808 & Krush TWS workshop in Kona 2011

I had an old friend named Krush from my old crew, TWS. We fell out of touch for maybe 10 years, and in the last year or so reconnected. Turns out he’s married with a child, and happy in Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i. Well now he’s got the bug and recently organized a hip hop workshop in Kona. Over 50 youth signed up, and had never used spray paint before to create art.

Prime 808 flew out there to lend a hand and share some knowledge. Wish I was there with them. Looks like they had a blast.
