Growing up when I did, with scribed memories of…
kids bringing vinyl flooring out at recess,
excitement surrounding the school dance, the highly respected DJ and his many crates,
the sounds of Planet Rock, flashing lights and battling b-boys fitted in matching Adidas track suits representin’ their crew.
And just like Sanaa Lathan’s character Sidney Shaw in the movie Brown Sugar,
“I remember the exact day I fell in love with hip hop.”

The Jacket Show, presented by TMC/TDK FAMILY, reminding us what REAL hip hop is all about.

Matt Powers wins Motegi Super Drift Challenge by Formula D at Long Beach Grand Prix

April 22, 2013- Powers wins Motegi Super Drift Challenge by Formula D at Long Beach Grand Prix

After an epic final battle with Mike Essa, Fatlace sponsored driver, Matt Powers and team took the top spot Saturday night in front of the Grand Prix crowd in the Nitto Tire/Fatlace Nissan s14.
“After that awesome of a battle, I didn’treally care if I won it or not” Powers said after his first Formula D event win. “That was the most fun drifting I have had in a long time” Essa told Powers as they awaited Jrod to announce the winner.

Powers qualified second with a 90.9 point run Friday night. He got a by-run against Kyle Mohan who had blown his engine on Friday and was not able to compete. He then faced and defeated Jeff Jones, and moved on to face Aasbo in the final 4 who crashed out after a One More Time battle. In the finals Powers was inches from Essa the whole course and then did an insane flick on his lead run sealing the win.

This was the first time in the Grand Prix history for any racing to happen during the night (lighted) and it was a historic event for Formula Drift as well.

Powers was excited to wash the champagne off his race suit to get it ready for Formula D Panama, where he will be doing a demo this weekend alongside other Formula Drift drivers Justin Pawlak, Odi Bachkis, and Joon Maeng. After that he has Formula Drift round 2 Atlanta May 10th-11th, then WDS China May 17th -18th

Import Reactor 2013 – Houston, TX

Import Reactor in Houston, TX is by far the most anticipated event every year for locals. There are only two bigger events that will roll by in Texas and that’s Wekfest and HIN. The chances of them coming to Houston are so slim that IR is definitely the choice of show for us. Now with that being said, Import Reactor, this year, was the absolute biggest disappointment for a show I have ever seen in Houston… so far.

Last year’s show was smaller than the one before and so on but I did not ever expect it to get this small. Don’t get me wrong; there were some quality cars out there. However, it was not an amazing show overall. IR has been slowly losing support over the years due to various reasons I’d rather not discuss online. This year’s parking was terribly coordinated and was split into two parking lots which indirectly segregated one team completely.

As I write this post, sleepy and tired, I’m scared that people around the nation will think that these cars solely represent the Houston car scene and I want to be the first to tell you that it is not true. The heavy hitters stayed home and the major teams spent their day away. I want to assure you; this is not our best as a city or state.

Now just to hit some key points about the show and then the photos can speak for themselves. The music was definitely on point and I always appreciate live entertainment. I didn’t pay attention to the awards very much except that the best of show was very clean Lexus LS that came all the way from Dallas. And just like every other show, there were beautiful models, a handful of impressive cars, and a lot of standing around.

Oh and I forgot to add that it was in collaboration with Anime Matsuri like every year. So here are some cosplay and convention pictures.

Mad props to veteran show goers that still showed face and supported the local car scene. Huge shout out to all the food trucks that showed up as well. We can only hope that next year’s show will be better.

Hellaflush Jakarta, After Sunset

As we Announced the Hellaflush Top 10 winners the clouds came in and poured down, I started to dread the show being washed out, literally. Luckily it came down just long enough to get the crowds out of the way so we could move their cars up in front of the stage and it stopped. Thankfully the rain also made some great photos possible! We gave the awards out to the Thankful participants as the sun set and handed things over to the DJ. And I finally got to concentrate on taking photos.

Wekfest Hawaii 2013

For its third year, Weksos Industries escapes the mainland to see what Hawaii has to offer. This year Weksos raised the bar by inviting judges who specialized in each award categories; in proper fashion, the Aloha State upped the ante and came out hard with the best imports, domestics, and classics.

Hellaflush Jakarta, Day

After a year of false starts, venues falling through and dealing with the floods here in Jakarta we finally had the show…
It was worth the wait.
The morning started off with a heavy tropical rain but it cleared as soon as the cars started showing up. Because there were only 100 spots in the show we had to pre-inspect the cars so I had seen most of them before but so many of the cars had changed wheels, stance, and in some cases even paint, it was like seeing a whole new group of rides.
We also had up to 250 cars at a time in the free club parking section with clubs rotating through at different times it was a constant stream of fresh rides coming through. Because we had to keep a traffic lane open for the restaurants it became a way for clubs to cruise by the main part of the show giving the whole scene that “American Graffiti” feel especially after the sun went down.

Hellaflush Jakarta Flood Relief meet-up

On the 26th we had the Love for Jakarta meet-up to donate event for the flood victims. It was a great success! It was really nice to see all the clubs lining up to donate funds for those that lost so much. We raised over $1,200 in cash + 2 delivery truck loads full of food clothing and insecticides + 1 set of KW V1 Coilover’s on auction currently bid at Rp 9,000,000. ($1,000 US) All the proceeds went to ACT Indonesia.

“Parallel Lives” by James Jean

Let me preface this post by saying that I’m not an art critic or connoisseur or snob or collector by any means. I get invited to the occasional art show, my creative friends are all pretty amazing in their respective fields and sometimes, I grow super passionate about the work I see. James Jean is one of those instances. I was first introduced to his name about six or seven years ago by way of comic books. Shortly thereafter he began collaborating in the fashion world alongside the likes of Prada and Philip Lim. As a broke college student I could only dream of purchasing a JJ original, so I scooped up limited edition prints whenever my budget allowed for it. His work has continued to remind me of a cross between East and West: an ephemeral mix of the American dream inspired by Asian aesthetics. It feels light (not to be confused with happy), fleeting and dreamlike, as if it’ll disappear any at any moment. His most recent exhibit at Jack Tilton in NYC is a far departure from the last time I saw his work at Martha Otero in LA. The macabre feel from nearly two years ago has given way to new mediums and much experimentation, all of which is still very, very beautiful. The gallery was packed to the gills so I waited until post-closing to shoot some shots. This crowd was maybe 1/100th of everyone who rolled through.

His portraits all seem a little less structured than that of previous shows. My personal preference sides with the older versions, but I am absolutely head over heels for the circular format in the middle. The only downside is that they’re only available in an edition of six. And I have no wall space, haha.

This is the first of his pieces that seems to retain a ‘pop art’ quality about it. My girl Sarah is crazy about it but it would clash with everything else I own. Big (and bright!) enough to overpower everything else hanging in a room, but still a beautiful piece and a great departure from everything else we saw.

This one immediately took me back to a piece at Mike Shinoda’s exhibit: Glorious Excess. Not completely similar, but you get why I thought of it. Kinda? No? Am I crazy? Love it regardless.

This multi-tiered painting grabbed my attention, but was not my favorite. I want to say I saw something similar in LA but I could be wrong? While I commend James for stepping outside his normal routine, it was pieces like this (and some jewelry) that made ‘Parallel Lives’ seem a little less cohesive. There were spurts of randomness that didn’t feel like it belonged. I would argue that this was one of them, but hey… maybe that’s what he was going for.

Now THIS was a favorite that I contemplated purchasing. Titled Wave (Swan), I found myself gravitating towards it more and more the longer I stuck around. To me, it’s the perfect balance of power and serenity… and the use of negative space is absolutely stunning. It also seems to embody the mix of East and West that I love so much in all my art. Truth be told, I’m still thinking about scooping it up, but with an upcoming move and travels galore lined up for the year, I should really stick to my resolution of saving more money. Then again, I also resolved to buy more art…

The largest installation of the evening, this piece is beyond overwhelming. While it contains tremendous intricacy and attention to detail, it falls flat in my book. It’s almost as though there’s too much to take in so I just see it and want to move on. I’ll blame that on my personal ADD and not James’ lack of artist skill or vision, haha.

Now this piece is hands down, bar-none my favorite of the evening. It’s grandiose and beautiful, but not overwhelming. It contains complex layers but can be easily digested in one glance. The colors are a stunning, earthy mix contrasted by the white painted over the frames. The varying dimensions make it fun to decipher and every time I look at it, I see something I didn’t catch previously. The best of writing makes me feel the same way, and always makes me smile. I really, really wish I had the cash & wall space for this beauty… what a sight to wake up to every day! #INSPIRATION.

This was our 5th year doing the annual Kingpin Disco and every year we try to bring home the crown. In 2010 we got close coming in 4th place but this year it was all about having fun as the booze got the most of us which led to some terrible scores!

If you have never been to a Kingpin Disco make sure to go in 2013 as every year it only gets bigger and bigger. Everyone that is part of fatlace / illest is invited to join us.

Agenda Long Beach 2013

The tradeshow season kicked off the new year with the first Agenda show in Long Beach this past weekend. Armed with my iPhone 4S and Izzi Gadgets Orbit I walked through the multiple aisles to share a bit from the industry only event. I selected a few up and coming brands to showcase alongside things that simply caught my eye.

First up is illest with their Summer and Winter Collection. I am really digging the tiger camo pullover and chambray 5-panels. There are a few other gems coming up that I’m sure we will release shots soon. www.illestbrand.com

Levi Maestro debuted his new fashion accessory with Becomb and the infinity piece. Learn more at www.becomb.com.

Original Chuck showcased a new line-up of bags along with an assortment of their snap backs with their first Agenda booth. Stoked to see these guys growing and doing well.

I didn’t have the chance to check out the new collection from Staple, but love their booth design.

A few of the homies hanging out in the aisles with Undftd and Stussy. This is often the scene within the pathways of the show. Business as usual.

One new brand that stood out to me was Komono with their simple and well-designed watches at an affordable price. Based in Belgium, I expect to see these watches show-up everywhere stateside soon. www.wearekomono.com

Mark and I saw this brand Krochet Kids that stood out. Since he has a family with 3 children and I’ve been shopping for newborns and my nephew a lot recently we were really digging the product offerings that ranged from beanies to scarves to bags and apparel. Each item is hand made by women in Uganda and Peru that have been given employment, education and mentorship and is accompanied by a label that bears the signature of the person who made it, carrying her story wherever it goes. One brand that I am really feeling is Uppercut Deluxe based out of Australia. I’ve seen their ads in Monster Children and was excited to see their product in person along with meet the people behind the company. One surf brand I’ve been following is VSTR (an off-shoot of Quiksilver) founded by Kelly Slater. The brand revolves around modern travel essentials for the ocean, road, and the journey in between. www.vstr.com

Sector 9 skateboards caught my attention with the San Diego Chargers theme, but if you look closely its all custom gear in the Chargers colorways.

One of my favorite magazines that captures the surf lifestyle with excellent editorial and photography is Monster Children. I’m stoked I was able to chop it up with the Publisher for a minute and get the latest issue and 2012 Photo Annual. I highly recommend checking the mag out. www.monsterchildren.com

Radii Footwear was kind enough to help keep my feet protected with these socks. Their shoes have been seen from everyone from Justin Bieber to Ne-Yo. www.radiifootwear.com

Another brand that I’ve been following and really dig is Poler from Portland. The brand embodies the outdoor lifestyle and the collection consists of apparel to outdoor products including camo tents, water bottles and even full body sleeping bags that you can walk around in. They were showcasing some outwear that looked amazing. www.polerstuff.com

Lira Clothing is a Southern California lifestyle brand that is under the radar, but is definitely worth checking out. The new cut and sew line is very well done with attention to details and quality overall. www.liraclothing.com

New sunglasses brand, Wonderland was kind enough to show me some of their collection. The brand has a great feel and classic sunglass silhouettes. I also enjoyed the vintage inspired imagery seen on the sunglass pouches. www.wonderlandsun.com

Being a Long Beach local I’m always interested to see what the team at Port is up to. They never fail to impress with their quality garments and accessories. I’m only upset that I wasn’t able to check out the skate photography exhibit they held on Thursday night. www.portlbc.com

Penny Skateboards is just rad and what makes them even radder is that they signed skate legend Christian Hosoi! www.pennyskateboards.com

Nike Snowboarding showcased their line of boots and outerwear. I haven’t had the chance to test of their product yet, but with their technology and innovation how can it not be good. I may need to invest in some new gear for the season. Check out the gear and a couple good videos HERE.

Mash-Up 2: DaYUUM Guppy House Meet

What are the chances that I would travel to Los Angeles and find myself to be blessed to find a local meet that I couldn’t get out in Houston? I was going to say very slim but then realized I was in the heart of the best place to find something automotive related to do on a Friday night.

My good friend, John Zhang (1013mm), told me about the meet when I mentioned I was coming into town and wanted to meet up with him. And I must say, I was not disappointed. I had my thoughts about actually going but figured why miss out on such a good opportunity to live in the scene. I was told it was going to just be a small meet and nothing crazy. From a half mile away, when I was getting close, I could see four intense lights rotating and blasting into the dark night. I told myself there was no way that could’ve been for the meet… Lucky for me, it was.

I struggled to find parking as the entire parking lot the size of Wal-mart was filled. I parked across the street and trekked my way over with a handful of others coming for the meet. Instantly, I was impressed with the turn out of the meet. Quality and quantity. What else could I ask for from an event? One thing I did notice was that there were a TON of Scion FR-S. I’ve only seen a handful in Houston myself but I probably saw more at the meet than in Texas. And speaking of the FR-S, I got to see the rocket bunny kit in person!!! And I must say, it is definitely a piece of art.

Before diving into a sea of awesomeness, we got a table and I got to enjoy the atmosphere of Guppy House and amazing company. I definitely recommend to anyone to check it out and get their shaved ice! This was considered a small!

Upon finishing a mountain of shaved ice, we walked around the entire lot. I was definitely in awe with all the dedicated members of the automotive scene in LA. John explained to me how everyone is trying to always one-up each other and how competitive the scene is in California. He told me that people mod their cars quickly but tastefully because there is always someone behind them trying to take the title of best [insert model of car].

After making my rounds, I spent the rest of the time just enjoying the go-go dancers and taking pictures of people taking pictures of them.

All in all, the meet was definitely a success. It was like a mini show without the awards. There were raffle give aways which included a set of wheels and even go-go dancers that dropped it lower than the cars in the parking lot.
