RWB : Up close and personal

RWB has in the last 12 months become a global tuning sensation, the work of Nakai-san has amassed legions of fans, as well as a few with differing opinions. A little over 12 months ago I took a trip to a small tuning garage, unaware that my outlook on tuning was about to be changed forever. The ‘rough’ world of RWB and it’s creator; Nakai-san are a mix of polarisation, twisted & tormented artist, and pure inspiration.

So what is it about RWB that has ‘changed my views’ you might ask? It’s just another car tuner isn’t it? Well for most who see this tuning marque from behind a PC screen, maybe. I was lucky to be adopted into the ‘RWB family’ and spend a lot of time with not only Nakai-san, but the customers and people that make RWB the tight-knit community that it is.

The one thing that is very obvious right-away regarding RWB is that it’s not primarily the cars that make this marque great, it is first and foremost the people. The different backgrounds, personalities, and tastes when all brought together are a recipe for very memorable times. The RWB end of year party is a perfect example of just that! Whether you are a RWB owner or a photographer, you will be welcomed with open arms.

Back on the workshop end of things, perfecting on perfection is not an easy thing to do. There is only one word to describe Nakai-san; ‘artist’. The RWB build philosophy is like no other. You won’t find any CAD drawing programs on computers here, in fact you won’t even find a pencil and paper with sketches. Every part of the build-process is purely inspirational and is etched firmly on his brain, sometimes it might take time for build inspiration to come to him. For maximum efficiency he works by night and sleeps by day so his creative process isn’t interrupted.

Where does this inspiration come from you might ask? Something as simple as his favourite beer is enough to inspire a build, a name for a car, and even the differing elements of the car itself.

‘Stella Artois’ is the first and last RWB according to Nakai-san. Named after his favourite beer, this 930 is certainly larger than life, it is as much as part of RWB as Nakai-san. All RWB’s are individually named according to the owner’s character. The final touch put on them before they roll out of the workshop.

I have had many opportunities to observe Nakai-san working, often he will just sit quietly with a lit-cigarette inhaling and exhaling while staring intently at a car, waiting for direction. When one cigarette is finished he will light up another, and then all of a sudden he will stand up, grab a angle grinder a cut away a part of a customers pride and joy. There is certainly no ‘undo’ button in this line of work and yet he never has second thoughts while working, he sees everything crystal clear.

This 993 is certainly a far cry from how it rolled into the workshop. It certainly takes a true artist to visualise this while looking at a standard machine.

Not everyone is aware of Mr Nakai’s primary building philosophy, no two cars are the same. Whether it is paint, body style, or the mechanicals of the car. It is a one off, guaranteed. Every customer also spends some personal one-on-one time with Mr Nakai so he can get to know them and have the car mirror the owner’s character. Customer service doesn’t get much better than that…

For anyone who has ever visited the workshop they will agree that this is one of the coolest workshops anywhere. Souvineers, trinkets, memorabilia of previous cars and races, as well a photographic timeline wrapped around the walls make this one lively building.

If you can’t feel inspired sitting here then you surely aren’t alive.

I remember asking Nakai-san on my first visit what he think separates RWB from other tuner companies. He replied with ‘I have never been influenced by peoples opinions, I did exactly what I wanted, and I’m influenced only by my own love of driving cars. This is why my Porsches are how they are’.

Shinji’s ‘Good Hills Speed’, was entrusted entirely to Nakai-san. The blood-red and gold combination is pure heaven on the eyes.

The cars are just as much at home being driven in anger on a track as they are cruising the Wangan. Toshi from RWB stated that “RWB’s can be taken out and raced hard by day on a circuit, then you can go and park them outside a big swank casino by night’. They are not just a one trick pony by any means.

The boss is a man of habits too, Idler’s race meetings are always started off with a meet and greet at Moriya Parking area, and then a good ol McDonald’s coffee and McMuffin. No need for the fancy-blend stuff, this is ‘rough’ world after all. ’I won’t be stopping smoking either’ he laughs in between puffs on a lit Winston cigarette.

This particlar 993 has a full cage, race stripped interior and all the running gear from a GT2 race car. The real McCoy. However despite how many seem to think, RWB is NOT made up of professional racers, Shimizu-san is a builder and simply has a passion for cars. Just the majority of the other RWB owners.

After a few visits and some long talks with Nakai-san, I found myself being influenced by him also. He has been a great help on how I look at photography, and was a big help in focussing my photographic eye.

This particular 993 is now onto it’s 3rd makeover. As Nakai-san’s visionary changes, so too do his personal RWB’s. This one started life as Afromania, then was changed up to Amazonia, and is now matte brown and named after a street in Thailand, which took his fancy on a trip there. The paint is mismatched, the petrol gauge doesn’t work, it rides super-stiff, and the windows are ill-fitting plexiglass, but I would take this car out of the garage over many other ones any day that is for sure!

It’s finished, although the amount of times he stands back trying to pick flaws in his own work to ensure perfection is staggering. After all, an artist is how own worst critic. Nothing but the best.

Now that more and more global interest and builds are coming in, Mr Nakai’s personal RWB’s now spend more and more time sitting outside next to the workshop as opposed to inside it. Such is the success of RWB outside Japan, that he almost spends more time out of Japan than in the workshop.

What was meant to be a simple one-off magazine article has ended up being a multitude of long-lasting friendships with great people. Nakai-san, Shinji-san, Pogi-san & Ishii-san are a bunch of top notch blokes. Not to mention the countless other good friends I have made through RWB!

I was trying to find a photo on which to end this post and this was the one that jumped out at me. It’s a workshop designed perfectly to fit Nakai-san. Nothing seems to be in it’s right place, pieces of cars and tools are all over the place, however in amongst this chaos he always knows exactly where everything is. Then sitting outside is Yves Piaget, one of the cleanest, and aesthetically stunning cars I have ever seen. The best way to describe this workshop really is ‘diamond in the Rauh’.

For the last 3 years, we’ve hosted Slammed Society with Formula D to bring out some of the nicest local cars from the area. This year was no exception as some of the nicest rides came thru. Check out the video we just finished and a few photos under the video.

The Kiwi obsession with the rotary

Let’s face it, aftermarket tuning is a massive movement all over the world. Some trends have come and gone (thank goodness!), although in little ol’ New Zealand one trend has almost become as much a part of New Zealand culture as pavalova, kiwibirds, and rugby! It is without a doubt our undying love for the rotary. Japanese classic car fans would froth at the mouth seeing some of the classic Mazda’s lurking around New Zealand, and then their eyeballs would pop out seeing some of the places we end up putting rotaries too.

Just as Mazda embraced the rotary engine, and then went mainstream with it, so have we, it has and continues to shape the automotive scene in New Zealand.

This isn’t just ‘tidy’, this is ‘immaculate’.

The outside of this classic-tuned RX3 is just as tidy as the inside. These cars are as rare as rockinghorse poo in Japan that is for sure!

It’s not just the classic Mazda’s we have a passion for, the newer ones are loved just as much.

This little 1300 Coupe started out making 86 horsepower, enough to ferry it’s working class Japanese family around. Today it is making 500+ horsepower, is caged, and tubbed.

If it fits, it will end up being a rotary…

Some of the classics such as this RX2 are still run as a daily driver despite being drool-worthy showcars…

New Zealand motorsport still has classes of these series 1′s raced with fields of 30+ cars. Like a swarm of angry hornets the sound of them is music to your ears!

D1NZ has a few resident rotaries footing it with the other competitors.

It is very true as well…

If you want crazy, this is it. 1200 horsepower sitting right behind your @$$ courtesy of a quad-rotor in a aluminium jetsprint boat.

Some of NZ’s best burnout cars are also running rotaries. I think by now you can see we are a little rotary mad…

Yes it is a Camaro SCCA race car, running…you guessed it! This 20B pp Turbo short crank Camaro makes just over 800BHP.

Pure American…errrr….muscle? Wait, no ummm……only in New Zealand!

This has to be one of the cleanest series 1′s I have ever seen…The ultimate car for a summer afternoon cruise with the windows down.

It’s a badge that is worn with the utmost pride. We all know the phrase ‘as American as apple pie’, well this is our ‘apple pie’. They might be noisy, high-maintenance, and suck a bit more gas but as a rotary owner myself, I for one wouldn’t have it any other way!

af imp Magazine and the Bonus DVD

Today, I got a rare opportunity to catch up a little with good friend Yu San and his wife Ayako. While I was there he presented me with a gift that he received from af imp magazine (Japan). I’ve been waiting for this for few months and I was totally stoked to see the final product.

Long story short I was fortunate enough to be included in the project to provide the “Hellaflush” bonus dvd with its musical soundtrack. The dvd came out nicely with dozens of tracks being used from the Mellow Orange music catalog. As always, my man Philip (iPhilms) was on point with his video shots and was phenomenal with his post production skills!

I want to thank Mark, Yu, and Philip for putting us on! I look forward to more collaborative joints in the near future, holla at me guys!

I was checking through the Mk1 section on VWvortex as usual and came across this car. It just stood out for some reason, and I thought it deserved some love. I really enjoy properly kept old school Euros. These are one of the handful of cars that can pull of the superpoke look in my opinion. The red and polished wheels really complete the package too. Wekfest Hawaii

Our last stop of the Wekfest Tour this year was in paradise. Honolulu, Hawaii brought out some of the coolest cars from the Aloha State. Another highlight of the show was the B-Boy battle that I’ve captured on video so look out for that but in the meantime, enjoy these photos from Anthony Nguyen.

So as we close out 2011, I’ve spent a few weeks reflecting what we’ve done as a company, movement, and culture altogether. Hellaflush this year was in one word, awesome. We’ve held an event in Hawaii, LA, a small event in the UK with our friends at Drift Allstars, and had our most memorable event to date at Fuji Speedway in Japan. We’re very honored and humbled by the people that support us worldwide.

Style is everything. We’ve been all about it all our lives and preach it thru our cars, the sneakers we wear, and thru the stuff we push on this site. 2012 we’ll be taking Hellaflush international. We’ll be making stops in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Osaka and Tokyo. In the US, Hawaii & Cali and we’re hoping to stop somewhere on the east coast and partner up with some friends out there. Gimme your idea’s on where to stop next.

I had the pleasure of running into Jimmy Ounvongsa this weekend at a Canibeat BBQ when he rolled in late with his static, wide, Q45.

The car hovered as it rolled in through the fallen leaves on its insane -8 degree front and -10 degree rear camber.

Final Pre-SEMA Fiat Post

It’s friday… SEMA is tuesday. You can be assured that come Tuesday, you will all be able to see our finished product but we have a few pics to show off before the final revelation. We are very excited about this car and the project as a whole and are very pleased with the way it came out.

The box that we’ve been talkin about so much is powdercoated, fitted with a deck, and lined up for installation.

Louie tightens up the final touches to the tool box installation.

It’s in! Minor adjustments follow the main installation to ensure proper function and dependability. It just wouldn’t be a proper car build without some boxer print showin’.

Kelvin throws on the final coat of green stain on the toolbox drawers after a light sanding.

The lip that we put on took this car took it from a cute toy to a beast almost instantaneously. We also, gotta give credit to the color of the vinyl we wrapped it in.

i still can’t show you guys the full car but don’t worry ‘cuz it still isn’t finished just yet. We have to throw the wheels on, drop it some more, finish another rack, as well as a huge long list of other odd ins and outs. We can’t wait for this thing to be done so we can show it off. WFC Meet and Greet 2

The 2nd Annual WrongFitmentCrew Mid-Atlantic Meet and Greet just passed. There was loads of cool cars on hand throughout the day. As with any meet lots of other random cars came out for the fun also. Which is good for those that need ideas on how to better the look of their ride. It’s good to see a small crew like the WFC that came out before the different Stance sites launched still doing their thing and growing every year across the globe while staying true to their low-key friendly vibe. TRIBE Agency FIAT 500 Revealed

Tribe’s FIAT500 Alpha Bravo project finally unveiled. Tribe has revamped the FIAT into a extreme sport based, fully equipped vehicle action vehicle. This FIAT stands out from the crowd, it inspires people to think in a different way.

Our rendering shows off the Fiat’s sleek new look. Custom Inno sports rack, exterior finish by Wraptivo and Meguiars, air lift suspension, and 6015-T6 forged wheels wrapped in Falken tires to brave all conditions.

Canibeat’s 2nd Annual First Class Fitment

Canibeat’s 2nd annual First Class Fitment was held at the Princeton Airport in New Jersey. Because spots were limited to 175 and the event was focused on the quality of cars attending, only a select few were chosen to show. Upon arrival, it was quickly apparent that some of the most hella flush cars on the east coast were in attendance. Here are some of my favorites from the show:

Sema Build: Fatlace Sonic Render

I got the call from GM about a new line of car called the Chevy Sonic and once I saw it, I knew it would be an awesome car to build. The lines are similar to some German cars and sleek like Japanese cars. Best of all its a Turbo. Here’s the render I came up with and although the wheels have changed a bit, I think it looks pretty cool. I submitted an alternate colorway and asked what they liked. They chose the rootbeer which is just as awesome.

The project manager for this build was Rob Daehn and our partners for this build are the following.. TNT Autobody, Ground Control, Rotiform, Driven Authority Aircraft front lip, side skirts, rear valance diffuser and rear spoiler, Wraptivo carbon roof, Euro Leather Inc. installed by Seatworks, Arc Audio, Acme tops & tunes Audio and Sac Town Audio installer.

You’ll be able to see the car in person at the GM Booth at Sema 2011 this November 1 – 4.

Daily Driven Static GLI

Recently I had the chance to catch up with one of my friend, Craig. He was telling me that he was about to do a major overhaul on his VW. Suspension, Wheels, ect ect. So I meet up with him to do a quick shoot before he started his build.

This is how his car currently sits….static

Currently he is ridding on a set of Rota DPT’s 18×9.5 et 10 in the front and et 7 in the rear. For his tires he went with a 215/40 all the way around…….little bit of stretch never hurt

For his suspension he went with a set of Raceland Coilovers. Soon his car will be on an amazing bag setup. With his car being static and so low his tires like to rub a little, on the outside and the inside.

I will leave you with two static shots of the car. Keep an eye out for the post when his car is finished.

The day before Hellalfush Japan we cruised by Craft. They specialize in wheels, tires and have some pretty cool personal cars. This particular one was a honda civic ek hatch. I truly believe these are future collector car. Including the EF and EG, the EK will all have value because of their distinct look.

Check out crafts civic which I thought would have won an award at the HFJP show but the only problem is that I couldnt find it in the crowd of awesomeness!

I still havent had a chance to sort thru all my photos but Id like to spotlight this little red firetruck wagon. Such a cool wagon that captured me the entire time at our Hellaflush Event. The driver was such a good sport, wore his firetruck outfit, and had a blast talking to everyone about his ride which he does race on the track. It was just lowered like this for the event but its used for track racing. Would be cool to see it drift, dont you think?

First of all I’d like to thank everyone who made it to the event. So sorry for the late update but we’ve been driving and finally have made it to Tokyo. I’ll be posting up lots of photos from the event in a few different posts so keep checking back.

The event was awesome. From what we heard from Fuji’s main office, it was the largest event they’ve ever had in that part of the race track. Its very humbling to know that such a little idea that started in 2004 has turned into something people understand globally. We’ve had Hellaflush in the US, UK, Hawaii and Japan this year and Im personally hoping to do a few more countries next year to help people understand what its’ all about.

Japan, as many of you know from photos from Speedhunters and alot of the other sites that cover Japan events, build cars that are outstanding. The attention to detail is incredible and they always goto the next level without any sacrifice. Seeing their builds always inspire and I along with the many people at the event weren’t let down.

The one thing I kept hearing people say is that our event was very different. They never have so many styles of tuning in one show. It’s always segregated by styles. Ours had VIP, Drift, Time Attack and Street with one thing in common. Hellaflush. Thank you Japan and see you next year.

And after the event, we told people on the mic NOT to go drift and drive safely but as with all of our Hellaflush events, the drifting started. No photos of that just yet so check back soon on my next post.. All I can say it was CRAZY.
