A new year, a new season of Formula D, and another round of Slammed Society Showcase begins.

With more entries this year than ever, there was a lot to cover, so let’s go ahead and get started with the winners of Long Beach’s Showcase.

For VIP, the winners were this 2nd gen GS..

…and 2nd gen IS. When it comes to VIP, you can never go wrong with these Lexus classics.

For Time Attack, we have these two Hondas, first and second place respectfully. Honda might not be putting too much out with their current models, but there’s still plenty of life left in the older ones.

For the Slammed category, we have this white duo. The S13 did a pretty good job finding all of the humps and dips in a parking lot that otherwise looked completely flat.

Unsurprisingly, the Drift category went to these two S13s. The Vert looked especially agressive and its roll bar helped emphasis its purpose.

The Classic/Muscle had to go to none other than this mint white BlueBird.

There were many other great cars though that didn’t get any awards, such as this spotless Beetle.

Speaking of rims, it was hard not to notice these rose gold Gram Lights with were on a SC300. Wonder if wheel manufacturers will start adding this as a color option.

If you ever want to make your car stand out more, painting it Barbie pink is one way pulling it off!

Not all of the cars here were part of the showcase. A pair of FCs that entered FD looked as good on the track as it did in the pit.

For the last 3 years, we’ve hosted Slammed Society with Formula D to bring out some of the nicest local cars from the area. This year was no exception as some of the nicest rides came thru. Check out the video we just finished and a few photos under the video.

Come 2009, Kris had finished his project and was looking for a new way to enjoy his R34. The next step was not what you could call a natural progression, but Kris decided to try his hand at drifting and rocked up with the car still in it’s full show trim on a set of Enkei GTC01′s.
This received mixed reactions, with many wondering why you would put a car through such abuse after spending so much time and money building it up for show. With little care for public opinion, Kris found his place in the sport and quickly became adept at the art of zip tie repairs as he punished the low body kit on the car. Having competed for two years, slowly removing the stereo and interior from the car to reduce weight, Kris has gone all in for 2012 as part of a three car team.
 Stripping the car bare, Kris is attacking the build of his drift car the same way he did with his show car, not leaving anything to chance.

Not content with just basic mods, metal is being removed without remorse. The body is being pumped with front and rear tubs and Z-tune guards up front and GT-R over fenders on the rear.

To maintain rigidity and for added safety, an 8 point roll cage has been fabricated. The leather dash remains as a tribute to its show car heritage, but there is little else to remind you of the past life of this R34 in the now bare interior.

 The build is still in its early stages, but this is one of my favorite parts as you watch a plan coming together. Kris is at the workshop night after night putting in the hours to get the car on track.
 Always a point of contention for JDM loyalists, the choice to go V8 is not one taken lightly, but the RB25 has been ditched in favor of a 5.7L LS1 V8 for easy, consistent power.
This is just a first glance and is only one part of a three car team being built at TTS Performance on the Gold Coast. I look forward to following the progress and taking a closer look at the other two cars currently under construction. Most importantly, I can’t wait to see these cars hit the track!

We first grabbed some food over at Serendipity eating outside as we gazed upon the annoying tourist this city brings.

Over at City center I wanted to get a new LV wallet, since I lost mine sometime ago.

As the nightfall’s, I needed to get some energy so we headed down the strip finding a cafe. No luck since Vegas doesn’t have any cool small cafe spots..We just cruised and enjoyed the city lights

I’m from the eastcoast so It was only right to Visit New York, New York. To my disappointment I didn’t see any hipsters from Williamsburg lurking around…FAIL

No way!? Honda Tuning…His dream come true…

After a day full of cruisin and eating, Sunkist wanted to go to the club. I HATE THE CLUBS, so I took some Beer & Drugs and everything got distorted..I think that building wasn’t suppose to bend like that…

One of the notable additions to the field is Nick Coulson’s Holden VE Ute, sporting the Australian flag livery. Pushing well over 400HP with just cams and an exhaust, the VE looked more than impressive on track.

Levi Clarke has joined the Tokage team and has completely overhauled the Soarer for the 2012 season.

It was also great to see the Hi Power Racing S15 back out track with Jerome Kennedy behind the wheel. With a complete JUN engine package and an extrodinary ground up build, this is a impressive car to watch.

With a full season competing in the Formula Drift Asia Series in 2012, GT Radial Drift Team driver Josh Boettcher is packing his exceptioanlly well sorted S15 into a shipping container and is sending it overseas for each of the FD rounds. So ten days prior to the first round of Stadium Drift, he picked up a Sil80 so that he can continue to compete in the local rounds with his high powered S15 currently getting a full engine rebuild in preparation for the first round in Malaysia in less than two months’ time.

Rob Whyte unleashed his supercharged Monster Energy Motul 350z at Ken Block’s Gymkhana late last year and this will be his first full season running the potent zed.

With the practice session underway from midday, spectators lined the pit wall to watch as drivers bake the final turn on to the main straight.

The new battle format saw the competitors fighting for spots in an A and B main final, with 4 places in each and the winner of the B main earning a spot in the A main final, which worked to the advantage of 2011 series champion Dan ‘Showtime’ Kenneally who spun in the qualifying but took of the B main to advance to the battle for top 4.

Being an afternoon and evening event, the sun dipping over the horizon provided a welcome drop in temperature as the final battles took place.

With a tough day of competition and hot weather wreaking havoc for teams, Tony Harrison prevailed and took out the top honors for the day.

The final results were, 1st Tony Harrison, 2nd Rob Whyte, 3rd Mick Rosenblatt and with a very impressive performance, privateer Kris Klutke battled his way into fourth place in his first outing in the Pro Series.

Following the main event, drivers were invited back on track for an evening expression session before the event came to a close. With very little available light, I made the most of the opportunity to catch a little of the action after dark.

The tour has 8 rounds for the 2012 season across the east coast of Australia and will be a highlight of local drift action for both drivers and spectators.

The next round of the tour is at Stanthorpe on the 15th of April and will really see drivers pushing as the battle for series points and outright victory really heat up!

I’m sure other photographers can relate, but my old camera was an extension of myself, I could work it with my eyes closed and knew exactly how it would respond in any given situation. Getting used to the new body and getting it set up the way I like took a bit of work. As far as I’m concerned, the best way to get used to it was to jump in head first! So, the same day I picked up the camera, I headed off to our local track at Archerfield for drift practice.

For me, the drift practice sessions have always been my photography practice sessions, so it was the perfect place to get settled in with the new rig. I find it the ideal place to practice technique and experiment with new ideas.

As the drift season doesn’t kick off until March, many teams are locked away in their garages preparing builds for the new season. With plenty of whispers around the paddock, I expect we will see some very impressive machinery roll out this year.  You often catch pro drivers keeping their skills sharp in the off season.

Jeff Andersen and the team at NizzPro are responsible for the weekly drift sessions and they are to be commended for providing a place for drivers to get on track every week.

It is always one of the highlights of my week and a great excuse to get the camera out.

One of the changes I have noticed is more Australian built vehicles turning up to slide. In a scene dominated by Japanese turbocharged vehicles, it is great to see some different cars on track and more people out having a go. I have also heard of a number of VE Commodores in development for the pro drift season, which should really liven up the field.

This Holden ute has been a regular at drift practice and can really put on a show, the amount of tyres these guys will shred in an afternoon is seriously impressive!

Interestingly enough, the locally manufactured cars often cop a bit of heat on the car forums, but I think it’s great to see them out having a go. The more people involved in the sport, the better. It will only see drifting in Australia grow over time with more grass roots support.

With January coming to a close and the year starting to build momentum, it is looking to be another massive year of motorsport. With the new national Australian Drift GP kicking off with a four round season after a successful test season in 2011, the Stadium Drift Pro Tour as well as the local NizzPro series at Archerfield, it’s going to be non-stop.

But enough chat and more pics! Here are a few more shots from January at Archerfield.

I’m looking forward to the year ahead and with a one day event on tomorrow at Archerfield, it will be great to see drivers battling door to door again!

The year got off to a bit of a rough start, with my home town of Brisbane flooding in January. Kayak quickly became the fastest way to get around as streets were blocked by the rising water.

This is a friend’s car in the aftermath, that couldn’t be saved.

As always, we got together and did the best that we could to get things cleaned up and as close to back to normal as possible.

Before long, the start of the V8 supercar season was upon us, so a quick trip to Melbourne to visit Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) was on the cards, as they showed their new team cars for the first time.

Back in my home town, the drifting season was just starting to heat up as the first of many days for the year was spend trackside at Queensland Raceway with a Pro-Am event.

The first round of the Stadium Drift Pro Tour kicked off on the Gold Coast in March, with competitors going door to door at the first event of the year for championship points.

During the year, I also spent plenty of time at the drift practice sessions held at the local short track at Archerfield. Although it doesn’t really allow for high speed, you sure can get close to the action!

The track at Archerfield is also used for go karts, but when drifters get a hold of the karts… only one thing can be expected.

The weekly sessions are the proving ground for local talent. But the best part is that during a busy week, you can take a few hours off to get the camera out and reel off a few shots.

The third round of the Stadium Drift Pro Tour was held at Wakefield Park in May and I joined drifters Rob Whyte and Josh Boettcher for the fourteen hour drive through New South Wales with their teams.

The afternoon before the competition at Wakefield, I got one of those perfect afternoons photographers dream of. A sunset that just kept going and no one else in sight. Just a team of drifters getting used to the new track. It was one of the best afternoons of the year.

As June rolled around, Josh Boettcher had been given the green light to pack up his S15 and head to Singapore for the first round of Formula Drift Asia with the GT Radial Drift Team. I joined Josh as he loaded his Silvia in the container for the journey.

Always taking the opportunity to head back to Archerfield between major events, I look forward to checking out the action in the local scene.

At the same time, Monster Energy drifter Rob Whyte had his new Nissan 350z taking shape at the hands of his Crew Chief, Ken Streeter. This was always going to be an impressive build, with a VQ38 HR sourced from Nismo, to be supercharged and pumped with with race gas.

By July, workshops around Australia were hard at work finishing builds to be debuted at the World Time Attack Challenge. At one of the local Time Attack days run by Paul Ruzic, This R35 GT-R rolled on to the track and jaws dropped as this beast unleashed.

With aero testing being one of the major aims for the day, Dave and Mitch were testing new wing designs on the golf buggy.

Queensland Raceway provides a chance for drivers to work on their high speed entries. Drivers never miss the opportunity to give it a push as we headed back out at the end of July for King of Drift.

One of the highlights of the day was when pro drifter Luke Fink entered the Street Class event to get some track time prior to the first round of the new Australian Drift GP. By far the best part was when on his first entry, Luke came in hard and kicked it backwards for a reverse entry. The commentator following the action didn’t know what was going on, as he tried to make sense of it. “Looks like he’s lost it, no wait, reverse entry, what the hell is this guy doing in street class!” Luke went on to take out all three rounds of the Australian Drift GP.

The paddock is always full of laughs, as we spend hour after hour in the sun, looking for ways to set up to for the perfect shot.

Off track never fails to impress either, as you see some of the finest examples of Australian ingenuity.

World Time Attack in August was one of the highlights of the year and Mad Mike unleashing his flame spitting quad rotor FD was a sight to behold.

Between Mad Mike’s FD and Tarzan’s Sun Cyber Evo, it would be hard to guess which was the most photographed of the event.

The fans from across the ditch certainly wanted to show the locals how it was done. At the night drifting event, team NZ went crazy whenever one of their local drivers screamed past.

As the V8 Supercars came through for the stop at the local round, I took the opportunity to check out the action. The one thing that I always take away from these events is the level of stress in the team garages. Being the premiere series in Australian motorsport, there is always more than just pride on the line. Team Principal of Stone Brother Racing, Ross Stone closely follows telemetry during practice.

Going to my first morning session of the year in August, it is always great to go back to enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.

During August, Rob Whyte’s 350z was launched as they completed the build in time to debut the car at Ken Block’s Gymkhana in Melbourne. I watched on with the team as he got used to the new car, slowly getting a feel for it, then dialing on the power.

Taking the opportunity to get a few shots of another Time Attack build for local workshop Hi Power Racing, I got to go for a spin in the Motul Nismo R34 that is developing over 400HP with a half cage, widebody kit but under the bonnet, still looks like a stock RB25. Complete with plastic engine cover.

Back out at QR in October, Rob and Josh had the track to themselves for the afternoon and got some testing done. But break out a camera in front of them and just look what happens… Strike a pose!

October also saw the second round of the Australian Drift GP come to Queensland, with the series testing for it’s first year, then moving to a full 4 round national format for 2012.

At the end of October, I made my first trip to Lakeside for the year, to check out the BMW Club as many club members took their pride and joy on track. I have quite a soft spot for the old 6 Series.

The Australian Drift GP has brought a number of drivers out of retirement, with the new national series generating plenty of interest. One such driver is Travis Roberts, stunt driver and performance driving instructor giving some love to Drift Works at the Driving Centre at Norwell.

One of the last drift events for the year was held at Archerfield by Jeffrey Anderson, hosted by his workshop NizzPro. One of the drivers that really jumped into the limelight in the local scene in 2011 was Dan Rasell. Being new in the competitive scene, he gained plenty of respect as he made a name for himself with massive entries and plenty of style. He will be one to watch in 2012.

My year of drift ended better than I could have ever imagined, as I traveled to Malaysia with Josh Boettcher and the GT Radial Drift Team for the final round of Formula Drift Asia.

Being trackside and watching top drivers from the region battle on the street circuit was a perfect end to the year. Sadly my trusty old 1D also exploded at the event, but luckily I was able to quickly get my hands on a spare Mk IV to capture the rest of the event.

A few months ago I was asked to work with GM to work on a new platform called the Chevy Sonic and prepare the car for thee most spectacular car show for enthusiast called SEMA. Once I saw photos of the Sonic I immediately did a quick render and sent it over to the guys at GM and said it was very promising. After spending a few more hours on the render, I was able to come up with 2 to submit and a few days later I was asked to work on 1 of 5 Sonics coming to the USA.

Tribe’s FIAT500 Alpha Bravo project finally unveiled. Tribe has revamped the FIAT into a extreme sport based, fully equipped vehicle action vehicle. This FIAT stands out from the crowd, it inspires people to think in a different way.

Our rendering shows off the Fiat’s sleek new look. Custom Inno sports rack, exterior finish by Wraptivo and Meguiars, air lift suspension, and 6015-T6 forged wheels wrapped in Falken tires to brave all conditions.

Remember to check it out at SEMA 2011 at the Meguiar’s Crazy Booth, and photos and videos will be up Nov. 1st, 2011.

As you work your way around the car, there are cues to indicate what is going on underneath.

Further inspection shows significant upgrades to the suspension components.

Lifting the bonnet, there is a H22A and an lot of piping telling you this is no ordinary build.

As you take a closer look, the details take a minute to soak in. Not least of all is the deep purple finish of the perfectly smoothed engine bay, that carries over to the engine.

The pipework and the TO4z attached dominate the landscape, delivering 1.2 bar into the 2.2L engine.

The turbocharged 2.2L engine is delivering 349.7HP to the wheels. Yep, the front wheels.

Now this is the point where many readers would quickly jump on the FWD / torque steer / just plain silly bandwagon, but having been a passenger in this EG, I can assure you that it gets every ounce of that power to the ground. To be honest, I expected it to be all of the above, but I was extremely surprised to discover that off boost, it was just like a normal road car and on boost, it just kept pulling. 

The owner is looking to push the power output past 400HP at the wheels and hoping to dip into the 10′s for the quarter. With a JUN head on order to hold things together, the next step isn’t far off.

The second part of the story began when another immaculate engine bay caught my eye.

Super clean is the only way I could describe this bay and following the naturally aspirated route, the owner of this EG is pushing 206HP out of this build.

Inside the cabin, it’s all business. With Defi gauges, Bride seats and bare metal, there is no room for luxuries.

But the red stitching around the gear lever is a nice touch.

Sitting in the drivers seat, there is a constant reminder in front of you of just how hard you can push these engines. Life begins at 8000RPM after all…

Again, this Civic fails to disclose the power and purpose hiding beneath the unassuming exterior.

These two cars struck me as quite special, as you can easily see the care and attention put into these builds.

I leave you with one final shot of the two Civics parked up at Hi Power Racing, but I am excited to know that there is still plenty more development coming on these cars. Check out the build list and the parts on order below. On top of that, I really want to see the White EG break into the 10′s!

Weather for the meet was a nice in the 70′s with plenty of wind to keep the Canibeat FCF official flags flying to let you know where you were. The mood was set with two DJ’s blasting classic 90′s rap and of course, Dubstep. Various vendors were placed through out the meet along with BBQ for food and Canibeat’s booth selling all their famous swag with plenty of help from a full staff. While it was a meet, there was still judging to set the best of the best apart from the others and to make sure a dope trophy was given to who earned it. The trophies came with help from CCW, each of the major categories was awarded half of a CCW LM20 Face, mounted on wood, with the Best of Show winning half a LM20 with a stepped lip and ARP hardware.

This year was definitely a success and this event continues to exceed expectations for car meets today. The Canibeat Crew made some smart moves in planning and made this a staple event for the East Coast. Dave Tormey, Roy Jang, Christopher and Cristian Loza, Heather McCaulley, and everyone in the extensive Canibeat family really are to thank for this super fresh event.

Currently he is ridding on a set of Rota DPT’s 18×9.5 et 10 in the front and et 7 in the rear. For his tires he went with a 215/40 all the way around…….little bit of stretch never hurt

For his suspension he went with a set of Raceland Coilovers. Soon his car will be on an amazing bag setup. With his car being static and so low his tires like to rub a little, on the outside and the inside.

The build is finally complete and here is a look through the finished product.

There are a few things that make this build a little left of center. To begin with, the VQ35HR was sourced from Nismo and being a high compression engine, not really suitable for forced induction… unless you get some serious fuel in.

With no guide to create this beast, the team at Bullet Cars were working from scratch. Every new component was designed and custom built in house. Taking the car from a twin throttle to a single, the custom plenum was designed, that sits just above the height of the Seibon Carbon bonnet. The Rotrex Supercharger is one the largest available in their range, but at this stage is only pushing a mild 8PSI into the engine. When this was combined with 108 octane E85 racing fuel and 4 degrees of timing, the zed developed 487HP at the wheels and a mind blowing 1600Nm of torque.

Inside the cabin, it is all very straight forward, with a Racepak dash covering all of the engine’s vital signs.

It is a very minimalist interior, with only the absolute necessities at hand.

The shots below are from the very first shakedown, as the build team waited nervously to see the car in action.

After a few gentle laps and checking to see the data was safe, it was on.

We took the opportunity to get a few shots of the finished car on track, completed.

Whenever you are debuting a new car, it is always a big moment. The team found the biggest moment in the calender for the year, as they rolled out the car for the very first time at Ken Block’s Gymkhana World Tour. Rob was invited to drive the 350 at the event and with less than 10 hours of track time in the new car he did the rest of his shakedown at full throttle in front of a packed crowd. Is there any other way?

With the zed having only been on track a handful of times, this story is only beginning. But I want to leave you with one final image from testing. The only way a drift car should be shown, sideways and baking.

2nd year shooting this track… Working with new camera, new lenses, and a messed up tripod. Wasnt the happiest with the footage i got either. Especially after thinking i uploaded everything, then reformatted the card to shoot stuff in Hawaii to come home and find out there was no way to get half of my files from Vegas back :/ , The card had been formatted too many times !

Anyways Vegas was a tough one. Walkers tranny went out again in Practice on Thursday, then Clutch pedal broke during qualifying thus knocking him out of top 32 and not getting to drive on Saturday. Meanwhile, Matt Field on the other hand was driving well all weekend. Coming in gangster on entry but was knocked out by aasbo in the top 32.

All in all good weekend, good people, I just wish that card was not reformatted !
