I ran into some old friends from the past. Not sure you knew this but back in the day, sometime in 1997 or 1998, I was the interim FTC art director / designer while they were looking for a replacement. I could be totally wrong with the year and it could have been in 1993 but it was years ago. I also had some epic parties at my house on Eastmoor as well and a couple skaters who are doing big things these days used to come by and peep the mega asian parties. Mike Carroll, Chico Brenes, Jovontae Turner, Ben Sanchez and a few other girl/chocolate skaters lived real close by so I’d see them on occasion. Heck we’d sometimes see Bob Burnquist mob down our hill at top speed as he was also a Daly City head. Boy those were the days…

Fast forward a decade plus later, Im seeing alot of my friends and acquaintances owning their own companies and doing things I never could have imagined. The passion for what they were into is what’s keeping them from failing, which is fresh.

Here’s Kent, Andy and Tetsuji of FTC Skateboarding and Western Edition. I’ve known Kent for so many years now. From being on Bush Street with his dad to dipping into the snowboard market with Solo Snowboards to making FTC a household name worldwide, Kent really is someone I look up to and hit up for advice from time to time. Look out for our colab this year.

Another friend I haven’t seen since he moved to LA years ago is Nick Tershey. I remember seeing Nick at EMB super young with an idea of selling bolts. I also remember seeing the prototype of Diamond bolts from Kent and them waiting for a patent to start selling it.

Today, Diamond is HUGE and a brand that everyone in the skate industry knows. Hard work definitely pays off.
