I went down to Virginia Beach once again this year to check out Springfest by Sumospeed and officially start my car season on the East coast – followed by Southern Worthersee down in Helen, GA; but that’s another post to come…

Although a monsoon rolled through for a good chunk of the show in VA Beach, I was able to gather a good gallery for you to get a feel of what the show was about. For the most part, great fitted cars, though there were many others with far more craftsmanship and ingenuity.

Tomorrow marks the opening day of the 40th season of the Drew League. The Drew is a summer basketball league that brings 28 teams to compete for a championship over the course of the Summer. Players include standouts in high school, college and even some pros.

Games are on Saturday and Sunday with seven games each day. In mid-June, NCAA athletes will be able to participate, and then after July 1, the energy will skyrocket, as NBA athletes will begin playing every weekend. Some NBA players that may participate include DeMar DeRozan, Paul George, JR Smith, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and James Harden. I’m definitely going to check out a day of b-ball over the summer.

These guys drove very far to come to the meet. Forgot where but I know it was a couple hours away.

Sweet RX7 came thru. Wangan style.

Lets start this off with a good beer. Since I have put beer a side for a couple of months (I know I’m crazy right) to get my body back into shape. Going to post up some picks from my good friend Drew. he has a Instagram posting nothing but the best crafted beers so check it out.

I begin this update with a little trip to Houston to pick up my built T56 tranny. Got all the good ready for the trip for me and the lil man.

I acquired the transmission from my good friend Evan. He owns D3 Performance Engineering and they do so sick work.. Only the best, they were the ones that tuned the Hennessy lotus. So needless to say they will be the ones that tune my car.

I also purchased some goodies for the T56. Monster Clutch was a no brainier and they were well helpful when deciding which clutch to go with.

I went with there 11″ clutch with pressure plate and light weight flywheel package.

Love the level of detail; just in making sure the customer package includes everything.

Also picked up my Saiko Michi Dual Catch can..

Okay lets start some installs.. I picked up a new Slave Cylinder. and a backup you never know.

But first I have to switch out the lines for my Chase Bays lines..

Next on the list is to remove this shifter level for a GTO one.

So removed the engine to start on the T56 install

Start out by removing the old pilot bearing.. I rented this blind puller to get the job done..

Let’s do work.. Took me about 2 min to remove.

I also re-taped some of the holes on the engine so the bolt holes would not striped. I used Hilico to get the job done.

Back in you go.. And yes I removed the shifter

Next I had to tackle the fuel setup. Went with Aeromotive 340 pump and also hit up CJM for their OEM Pump To -6AN and Return Fuel Correction Kit..

Took out the old fuel pump unit

Take it apart

Pop this bottom cap off that holds the fuel pump in..

Remove the sensor

Install the filter bag (I think that is the name oh well)

Place back in

You have to shave done some of the cap to make it fit.

Drill this sucker, if not you will have a rough idle..

Time to install the return line.. Drill whole

Complete!! Now just place back in the car

So painted my Coolant tank

And reinstalled.. I think it looks 10times better

Also while the engine was out I installed my new fittings for my power steering rack

I picked up these sick locking bolts for my headers so they will not leak on me.

Now here is a pic of them installed BUT… this one I took a pick of had to be fixed,, as you can see it would not be doing any thing if it was not at the 11 position. But I liked this pick so posting it…..lol

While I was waiting on hoses and fittings. George sent me the kit we have been working on for the dual caliper setup. This thing is top notch..

Bracket bolts to your hub and actually pushes your wheel out another 4mm. So def have to take note of that when getting my 18s for drifting.

Everything is included

So these are going to go into production soon but George sent out a small batch to some people for testing. Once that is all said and done he will start selling them like he does the S13/S14 brackets on zilvia

So for now I will only be using the OEM iron calipers.. Still bouncing around which calipers I want to run.

Sorry to say but you will loose the OEM e-brake with this setup. But he is working on another kit to keep it. But for me BecauseRaceCar…lol

Sanctiond car care brought out a collection of lowriders to display including a couple from the personal collection of Estevan and Mister Cartoon. Next door at Tony’s Saloon, DJ Skee and Thee Mike B spun while mixologists poured signature cocktails. I highly recommend the dark and stormy here. Overall, good times and great food.

We arrived a few hours before our Slammed Society Showcase roll in so we had a chance to check out some of practice runs and scope out the rest of the venue. Long Beach is one of my favorite tracks of the season so I was really stoked to be back. I must say, this year the entire field is stacked with amazing drivers and even more amazing cars. The paddock also had some pretty awesome cars too.

We didn’t realize that JR was pretty much running on 3 wheels this run until after we uploaded this photo. Crazy.

As practice for the day ended, lines and lines of cars were starting to arrive waiting to be staged. Southern California never disappoints. It is always good to see cars that you may notice from previous events and see how much progression and ideas the owner has come up with. We saw everything from american muscle to bagged VIPs and everything in between.

We got all the cars staged and called it a night. We came back bright and early the next morning and got ready for the day. You can find Yogi’s coverage of the showcase HERE. Overall, it was an awesome time and we want to congratulate the winners again and thank everyone that came out. We hope to see you all real soon.

“Nasir Jones, who goes by the stage name Nas, is an icon of hip-hop.  At the age of 19, he dropped his debut album, Illmatic, universally acclaimed by music critics, hip-hop heads and later by academics as a modern classic.  Nearly 20 years later Nas has already had more than one ‘comeback,’ though with his 10th album, Life Is Good, he proves that he never really left.”

The 787B is certainly a car that needs no introduction, already one of the most well known racecars ever, this giant-killer went to the 1991 LeMans 24-hour enduro with one purpose.  That was to squash the competition and do it as the underdog.

Powered by a R26B quad-rotor engine, Mazda was confident that their collaboration with Mazdaspeed would be a powerful competitor for the 3.5l competition.  The 787B was built as a ‘one-shot wonder’ by the team as the following year only 3.5l piston engines would be eligible for entry.  The longitudinally mounted engine was capable of producing 700BHP, as well as a noise that is still remembered by anyone who was fortunate enough to hear it.

It’s one thing to see an example of such an iconic racecar but I knew very well that sitting in front of me was the actual 787B that entered LeMans.  This car was thrashed for 4932km around the Circuit de la Sarthe and performed faultlessly.   Since then #55 787B has been tucked away, the apple of Mazda’s eye is rarely seen out of the museum now.

I have seen videos, photos, and all kinds of media however soon I was to hear this car get turned over and driven in public for the first time in 21 years.  Mazda had just completed their full rebuild on the car and this was the Japanese unveil of #55.

If it sounded as good as it looked then I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed.  In 1991 3 of these cars were entered in an all-out assault on LeMans.   Mazda’s ‘nothing to loose’ philosophy was hammered home when just before the 9 drivers suited up the team manager called a hasty drivers meeting.  In not so many words they were told that the 24-hour enduro ‘was to be driven at sprint pace until the chequered flag’.

The drivers did as they were asked as when Johnny Herbert pulled into the pits after winning he had to be helped from the car after suffering from severe dehydration, missing the winners podium due to needing hospital treatment.

The cockpit was certainly built for business and comfort took a backseat.  It’s a office of very close quarters and if you have seen the video of Johnny Herbert driving it you can see it’s cramped.  The body weighs in at 840kg and is a carbon and kevlar composite.

Of course it was fitting that one man in particular should be the one to terrorise our ears when the engine was fired into life.  Yojiro Terada who piloted one of the 1991 cars was on hand to be reunited with a car that he pedalled 21 years prior.  Understandably he was quite quiet and reserved after being belted in awaiting the call to ‘fire it up’.

Finally the call was made, a eerie silence fell over the crowd as all of a sudden the air was filled with a short, sharp scream followed by a impatiently quick idle and then plenty of throttle.  It’s a sound that can’t be described, my ears were being abused and serenaded at the same time.  They say this is a car that you will never forget, they sure were right about that.  You just know the as the years roll on the Mazda 787B is going to grow in size as the legendary beast that came, saw, and conquered the competition, and the Circuit de la Sarthe.
