Saks wants you to OBEY

GRAPHIC APPEAL Saks Fifth Avenue has turned to Shepard Fairey, whose work captures the bold style employed by Rodchenko in the 1920s.

SHOPPING, these days, is a political act. If you are brave enough to buy a $2,000 Prada handbag, you might rationalize that you are helping to stimulate the economy. Solidarity, people!

Saks Fifth Avenue, which has surely felt the recession’s sting, is taking just such a fist-raising stand with its spring marketing. The campaign is inspired by the bold graphic designs and propaganda spirit of Constructivist art — although it is intended to be tongue-in-cheek.

The store hired Shepard Fairey, the artist who created the stylized Hope poster of Barack Obama that became one of the most highly visible, though unofficial, images of the presidential campaign, to design its catalog covers and shopping bags. They bear a rather unsubtle allusion to advertisements made in the 1920s for state-run department stores in the Soviet Union.

“What we do every day, really, is propaganda,” said Terron E. Schaefer, the senior vice president for marketing at Saks.

So why not go whole hog?

The Saks slogan, “Want It!” is printed in lettering similar to the graphic designs of Rodchenko, the Russian graphic designer who was one of the founders of Constructivism. The images, largely realized by Cleon Peterson of Studio Number One, Mr. Fairey’s design company in Los Angeles, depict the season’s trends in black-and-white images with geometric slashes of red, some of them shown on models posing as if they are champions of workers’ rights. An ad for a slouchy bag, for example, tells shoppers to “Arm Yourself,” while a style of relaxed, cropped shorts are described as “Brave Pants.”

Asked if his work could be misunderstood as some sinister form of retail indoctrination, Mr. Fairey noted that he was also looking at agitprop posters made for the Works Progress Administration in the 1940s, to lift morale.

“Some people might think it could be making fun of what’s going on right now,” Mr. Fairey said. “But I think most people are sophisticated enough to realize it’s a way of grabbing attention. It’s commerce. I don’t think there is really any political statement embedded in this.”

Given the pricey goods Saks is selling, it’s not likely anyone would accuse the store of being socialist.

blackbook sessions
January 7, 2009 – 1:30 am | One Comment | submitted by boohi

I was browsing in the Forums and there was a topic that got me reminiscing about sleepless nights from the hours of 2 to 5 in the morning. I went up to the attic and dug up a big box of my blackbooks full of drawings, I think it took me 4 hours to thumb through each page… It was like a diary of my life from the years 88-1998. I know it was 98 because this was the year I graduated from Udub and made the exodus to the bay area. From 98 on it was career life of the 9 to 5 grind of data sheets, bug data bases, test cases, to powerpoint slides, desktop publishing and my all time downfall adobe products.  In the pages I could visually see what was going on with my life from love, depression, anger… I even had a page that said “why does my teeth feel numb and why can I see through my hands”  I’m guessing that was the first time I gave into peer pressure and met Jah for the first time. There were some pages I could still smell the paint and feel the texture of ultra flat black mist, because that page had a sketch I used for a wall. ok enough looking back to the past… here’s some pictures because I’m too lazy to break out the scanner… I wonder if I’ll be writing about this stuff in 25 years but the topic will be about online blogs.

My earlier books I don’t know why I wasted my time with the design or prisma markers… I think I just liked the smell of it.

here are some photos I found… I’ll try to dig up some walls for the next post.

Right now I’m reporting live from Monrovia… all I know is it’s somewhere close to Pasadena.

I felt like Tom Hanks for real… We endured 17 hours in Seatac Airport and got out of there right in the nick of time because I heard the rest of the flights that day were all cancelled.

Here’s some snow good pic from my phone…

Here’s actual photos of the hanging bus. (courtesy of Rosque the Rocklord Estoque)

I didn’t know if i was VIP in a really bad club, or sitting couch in a really nice plane.

thick ice view out my window… departing Seatac

on the descent down to LAX, I was able to catch a couple of ice before it melted away.

been rough trying to get that holiday spirit. I’ve even been bumping warm106.9 Christmas music 2 weeks before Thanksgiving. The grind at work has been heavy, but now things are slowing down and with the first sight of snow 3 nights ago and warnings of a snow storm tonight… it’s begining to look a lot like Christmas… until we head down to LA this Sat. for some 80 degree weather. hehe regardless Christmas is good in any kind of weather..

I was going get deep and reflect on life in this post, but I’ll keep upbeat. If I realized anything from these past weeks… I need to be a better God Son, and an even better Ninong.

Peace out and Have a fresh Holidays!

RIP Ninong Ben.

I been trying to do personal stuff… but why do i get the urge to work only between 12-4am? I’m not in college anymore…
