The homie Linyee came to visit last night with her boys BLK JKS who were in town for a show at M Room. I haven’t seen Linyee since her Bday BBQ in July and I didn’t get a chance to go to her weekly summer jam The Kitchen Tuesdays, though I’m sure it was poppin. Since Linyee always takes care of me foodwise when I visit her in the BK, I had no choice but to give her the royal treatment in return. Since Linyee ranted and raved about the Laotian food from my baby shower, I took her to Vientiane Cafe in West Philly.

It says Laotian Thai, but thats just for the scaredy cats.

I think this picture says it all about Linyee’s appetite. I’m still trying to remember all the settings on my camera since it’s been away for repairs so long, but I still can’t get good stills in low lighting so sorry, no close-ups of food. But in case you’re wondering (from left to right) that’s beef jerky, fish cakes,and papaya salad. That funny little reed basket thingy Linyee’s holding up is a case of sticky rice. After having our fill, headed back to the M Room to see the guys play.

Once again, low light settings, plus I think I was really trying to get into the music, which was described to me as “psychedelic electro rock”. I sensed a little bit of Ska in there as well, but these guys were really good. Too bad M Room wasn’t bigger and the show set wasnt longer, I look forward to hearing the album. Talk about timing, whenever my dad wants to take a little family trip, something always happens in Philly. Case in point, this past weekend. While my dad convinced me Boston would be a great getaway, the 215mag release party and Mad Decent block party were happening the same day. Ughhhhhh!!!! Add to that all my friends calling and texting me to see where I was. Here’s a little peep of all the fun I didn’t have, first the 215 hayday:

As if missing two great block parties wasn’t rubbing it in enough, I missed the Adidas x Y-3 party at Joan Shepp. You may be familiar with the first two names, but every Philly girl with a credit card knows who and what Joan Shepp is – just about the only place within a 10 mile radius to carry Christian Louboutin, Linda Farrow, and Balenciaga. Ok maybe someone else carries them too but Joan’s been around for a minute, plus she always has a hot ass store front worth checking out. Here are some of the pics from the event:

Philly’s best youth-culture journal is herrrrrrrrrre, yay finally. And of course they’re having a massive around-the-way block party throw-down to celebrate.

At the Piazza in Northern Liberties, special guest’s include Low B (Diplo’s partner from Hollertronix), Elevator Fight (Zoe Kravitz’s band – umm did someone changed the name on me?), Dave P, Sammy Slice, Dice Raw, Writtenhouse, and Mr. Lif. Party details below:

Roots Picnic, who wants to go?

Ever since the dopest hip hop band in the whole wide world threw their big Picnic concert in Philly last year, errrone’s been asking “Whens the next one?” Some of you may have seen pictures here and there or read about it on a buncha blogs, but lemme just tell you being there and witnessing all that in the flesh, shit was bananas (aside from the 200-degree weather). I have to say watching Gnarls Barkely perform with a tuxedo-suited band (that included Quest in full attire too) was the absolute highlight.

Well kids, it’s almost June, you know what that means? It’s officiallllllllllllll. The Roots Picnic this year is June 5-7th. You can get your tickets online, or you can get the hookup through 215mag. Yep you heard right. They’re giving away a VIP package deal that includes admission to the pre-party, paid transportation via Amtrak (East Coast only though, sorry), teo nights at the Hotel Hyatt, dinner for two, a signed copy of a limited edition Philly 360 degree book featuring The Roots plus a gift basket of goodies from Philly’s finest establishments. The only catch is that you have to sign up for it here and wait for them to get back to you via email when they pick winners by random on May 29th. Wait, was that really a catch? Not really, so what you waitin for?

I don’t feel so bad for going out while preggers, saw so many who didn’t even know. Had fun and I got to go dancing afterwards!

That’s Tina (Topstitch) on the left, looking at me confused as to why a model with a beer belly is in the green room (she didn’t recognized me behind the camera) and Has making all the models looks beautiful.

Has’s tools. I do not envy her collection. I just go over her house and get my face done.

Tina comes over to give me the “Look-how-big-you’ve-gotten hug” while Niki and Olivia watch.

My favorite Morrocan chick Asmaa checking out her new do in the mirror and JC (Closet Fever) who basically cuts and colors all of my friends’ hairs, and styled some of the models’ hair for the show, gives me her best Zoolander.

Shavana, my old intern confesses to me that she cut of 6 inches of her hair, I can’t really tell because it’s like a mullet and she wears some sort of hat or bow, or band over her head all the time anyway… but then she takes off her hat. *Gasp*

Niki and Olivia get caught contemplating which article of clothing they wanna take home – shame on you!

Niki gets some alone time with the camera man, and I think this is a model and her mom helping her out. So cute.

Gravy going over hosting duties with Linda (Toptstitch). Jess holdin’ down the raffle table with Linda’s earrings and rings as prizes. Awww man, looking back now, I meant to sign up. Dammit!

Zakee (Green Owl Records) poses with one of the rubber hearts. The ironic thing is that Zakee works for a music company (founded by M.I.A’s finance Ben Brewer) that focuses on an eco-conscious music and lifestyle, but this guy on the right decided to dress himself up like a Ninja Turtle, put “Earth Day” signs all over his body and call himself “Earth Man”. I don’t know if anybody thought about conserving the environment after seeing his getup though.

I wanted to check out some of the artwork, but food was calling my name. I answered promptly.

But you know me, I’m eating for two – couldn’t just wait by the tables all day. Stuffed everything into a cup and then made my own spread – on a railing! If you’re wondering why there are rubber hearts all over the place – like next to my breads – it’s the theme of the show, hence the name Heart to Heart. I don’t know where Linda came up on them but she put it to good use and for a good cause.

For some odd reason, I feel like I’ve gone out more in my pregs stage than when I was single. What can I say, I miss seeing my friends.

First on tonight’s agenda: My good friends Tina & Linda who run Topstitch Boutique are hosting their very first fashion-charity show at F.U.E.L gallery (that’s the old Real World house to you non-Phillyheads) called Heart to Heart. Proceeds help the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, specifically those battling heart conditions.I’m really excited because there’s gonna be a runway show with some of my friends modeling. If you’re in the area come through – unless you have other plans or just too cheap to think about showing some compassion towards children with heart conditions, I’ll most likely see you at 349 Arch Street. Shout out to Kelly Turso who shot both pics.

Then I’m headed over to Dutty Chutney, a Bhangra Reggae party I help throw with some friends of mine. It’s hard to explain that kind of mashup but it’s fun as shit. Just imagine if M.I.A decided to do a mixtape with Sean Paul (Old School Sean Paul, I should say), that’s what we’d be playing. Plus they’re serving free beef patties and samosas tonight? Holllerrrr.
