BLABAC PHOTO BOOK EXHIBITION @ FTC
August 18, 2009 – 12:11 pm | Comments Off | submitted by fongstarr

As a half-ass pony boy photographer myself, I admire the people that have paved the way for all of us skate rats to see the latest photos in skate mags that we so elegantly dismiss as shitter reading material. Blabac has been one of the pioneers of skateboard photography and he is having his exhibit displayed next week at FTC. Don’t miss out.

A BUTTERY ASS SPOT
July 12, 2009 – 11:11 am | 4 Comments | submitted by fongstarr

As my skate skills disintegrate to oblivion, there still a couple of people (Big Philly Style and Dustin My Shoes) that still have it.

A buttery ass nose slide.

A buttery ass kickflip.

A buttery ass krooked grind.

A buttery ass ollie.

Later on my way to dinner, I crossed my way to the other side of the tracks and stopped by the Atlas photography show (well, I guess you can call 9 photos a photography show) that showcased the making of Mindfield.

I guess that means on both sides of the rainbow, there is a pot of gold. I could sure use the money right about now.

ADIDAS SLAP SHOE RELEASE @ FTC
July 10, 2009 – 2:36 pm | Comments Off | submitted by fongstarr

Finally, the underground cult favorite shoe is finally being released. (I have to admit, I am a SLAP Pal and am on the SLAP forum almost 70% of the time when I am on the web) Created by Slap and voted by the SLAP Pals as the final colorway to be made for us and skaters alike. I am super siked to snatch a pair of these at FTC’s shoe release party. Great shoe, great skate mag website and all under one of the best skate shops in SF.

After you grab your kicks, head on over to Milk for the after party.

PRIDE 2009
June 29, 2009 – 10:41 am | One Comment | submitted by fongstarr

I must apologize in advance if I might be a little crude with the next couple of words that are typed out. Talking about gay pride is like walking on pins and needles. On one half, you want to be as open minded as possible and to realize that these people (Wha choo mean these people!) are human beings like the rest of us on this planet. On the other hand….well, this is pretty weird shit for even an out of the box person as myself. First things first, got to get the stomach prepared.

Crepevine is literally everywhere in SF. It’s nothing really that tantalizing, except for there Asian chicken salad that was….oh my god, to die for!

On to the show. This are just a smigit of what I saw but for some reason I was getting headache spasm from all the techno music that playing, so I couldn’t be as photogenic as I could have been.

First off we have Mr. Lonely Butts here. Claims himself to be a vegan but looking at his love handles and his 3 inch butt crack, I’d put money on it that this guy was a half ass liar. The message was good but the execution was about a negative 39. Kudos for the matching head piece and purse enhancements though. Martha Stewart would have been proud, until you said you were an ass pirate.

Frank mutha fuckin’ Chu was in the house as usual. Once a protesting whore, the guy practically says nothing now, but embraces his star power as he literally has hundreds of people walk up to him to take a picture with him as if he was Mickey Mouse himself.

These guys were a riot. I think I gazed at there booth for like half of a milli second before they frolicked over like a pair of fairies, insisting that I buy a Now Go Homo shirt. I explained that would be a conflict of interest seeing how I liked vaginas and other holes of that nature, but felt like they thought they could suede me the other way if the had the power to.

The picture explains itself….or maybe not. And no that his not his wiener. It is a wooden shaped dildo that is replicated to be his wiener. What kind of man do you think this is!

Holy….

shit!

These guys were popular for about two seconds until the about 5 drag queens stole their thunder and marched off with the crowd. I mean who hasn’t seen men on stilts before. I should have taken a dump on the streets and declared myself the mayor of all feces everywhere. Probably would have gotten a picture or two and a nice hand slap on the ass.

And my favorite picture of them all. If there is one thing that is embedded in my mind, Pride is about being openly happy and freakin’ colors. Everyone came out in fine fashion with their best dressed attire. It was entertaining for the most part, but I was so jaded by all of it from my sleepless nights from before. I guess I can finally say I went to Pride for once. Not for the squeamish at heart (my cousins said some girl getting plowed in the porta potties) but if you look past it all, it really is just a big ass party.

A CHECK OFF THE BUCKET LIST
June 21, 2009 – 1:46 pm | 8 Comments | submitted by fongstarr

This was sort of a birthday present to myself for my 28th birthday. You’d be surprised how you can’t scream for anything when you are falling 13k from the sky. Honestly I wasn’t scared at all….except 5 minutes before take off when I was jittering like a little school girl. But I think my female coworker said it right, giving birth to two kids is definitely worse then skydiving. Don’t talk about it….seriously….go do it! This is part of the perks about being a single guy like myself. I could have died right there and been a happy man, but as fate will have it, I am sure it has more in store for me in the future. I guess I am game for whatever is in front of me. I don’t look at it as a challenge no more, but more of a thing to just get past as another thing in your life. There will always be something else to bitch about, so solve the problems now and move forward. Well, another year past and another birthday down the drain. Perhaps on my 29th, I’ll try to ollie down Wallenburg. I am more scared of that then skydiving!

WORLD PREMIERE
June 18, 2009 – 4:49 pm | Comments Off | submitted by fongstarr

Went to three skate premieres all in one night. Nike’s Debacle, Transworld’s Right Foot Forward and Zoo York’s State of Mind.

Debacle, hands down the best Nike skate video to be made all at a whopping 20 minutes or so. Skits that weren’t as pointless as the last film (shattered glass was the theme) with great editing thanks to Jason Hernandez and great parts by all the AMs. Daryl Angel had probably the most solid part to me. Solid trick selection and smooth style without that robot thing going on. Crowd favorite goes to Theotis and Grant Taylor. Grant Taylor has sure come a long way since his little kids steez but the guy is flying like a bat out of hell. Second video was the Transworld video. Again not to spoil anything but Kellen James and Joey Brezinski both readlly had stand out parts. The things you can do with your skateboard nowadays just blows minds. 50-50, coffin grind to manuel. Yeah, that’s what I said….coffin grind.

After made my way to the MILK bar for the last premiere of the night. Free Miller Lites were flowin’ to help celebrate local Zoo York AM Matt Miller on his part in the State Of Mind video.

The Zoo video wasn’t without its problems and unfortunately wasn’t up to par with the others that I saw. There is just a different comparison to New York City gritty skating to that of the cleaner and larger tricks that happen here in gold coast. They started things right with their star skater Westgate going huge with his utterly ridiculous pop (why ollie down stuff when you can ollie up it) but it never got any better then that. Just sucks with such a great team that they aren’t really displayed in a proper manner.

Still, Zoo York (regardless if backed by Marc Ecko) isn’t for the kids and is for the people that know what’s up with skating in the city. It isn’t for the trying at heart and is for people that have a natural flow in just cruising down the streets knowing you can get broke off at any moment. I love it all….cause for the most part, I can’t do any of it.
