A CHECK OFF THE BUCKET LIST
June 21, 2009 – 1:46 pm | 8 Comments | submitted by fongstarr

This was sort of a birthday present to myself for my 28th birthday. You’d be surprised how you can’t scream for anything when you are falling 13k from the sky. Honestly I wasn’t scared at all….except 5 minutes before take off when I was jittering like a little school girl. But I think my female coworker said it right, giving birth to two kids is definitely worse then skydiving. Don’t talk about it….seriously….go do it! This is part of the perks about being a single guy like myself. I could have died right there and been a happy man, but as fate will have it, I am sure it has more in store for me in the future. I guess I am game for whatever is in front of me. I don’t look at it as a challenge no more, but more of a thing to just get past as another thing in your life. There will always be something else to bitch about, so solve the problems now and move forward. Well, another year past and another birthday down the drain. Perhaps on my 29th, I’ll try to ollie down Wallenburg. I am more scared of that then skydiving!

WORLD PREMIERE
June 18, 2009 – 4:49 pm | Comments Off | submitted by fongstarr

Went to three skate premieres all in one night. Nike’s Debacle, Transworld’s Right Foot Forward and Zoo York’s State of Mind.

Debacle, hands down the best Nike skate video to be made all at a whopping 20 minutes or so. Skits that weren’t as pointless as the last film (shattered glass was the theme) with great editing thanks to Jason Hernandez and great parts by all the AMs. Daryl Angel had probably the most solid part to me. Solid trick selection and smooth style without that robot thing going on. Crowd favorite goes to Theotis and Grant Taylor. Grant Taylor has sure come a long way since his little kids steez but the guy is flying like a bat out of hell. Second video was the Transworld video. Again not to spoil anything but Kellen James and Joey Brezinski both readlly had stand out parts. The things you can do with your skateboard nowadays just blows minds. 50-50, coffin grind to manuel. Yeah, that’s what I said….coffin grind.

After made my way to the MILK bar for the last premiere of the night. Free Miller Lites were flowin’ to help celebrate local Zoo York AM Matt Miller on his part in the State Of Mind video.

The Zoo video wasn’t without its problems and unfortunately wasn’t up to par with the others that I saw. There is just a different comparison to New York City gritty skating to that of the cleaner and larger tricks that happen here in gold coast. They started things right with their star skater Westgate going huge with his utterly ridiculous pop (why ollie down stuff when you can ollie up it) but it never got any better then that. Just sucks with such a great team that they aren’t really displayed in a proper manner.

Still, Zoo York (regardless if backed by Marc Ecko) isn’t for the kids and is for the people that know what’s up with skating in the city. It isn’t for the trying at heart and is for people that have a natural flow in just cruising down the streets knowing you can get broke off at any moment. I love it all….cause for the most part, I can’t do any of it.

HAIGHT ASHBURY STREET FAIR
June 15, 2009 – 10:52 am | One Comment | submitted by fongstarr

This is a easy formula, and apparently something that will be happening almost every weekend in the summer. Close a street, get food vendors, music and trinkets to sell, post up fliers and posters about it and watch as hundreds of people come out to have a good time.

Haight Street used to be the hippie epicenter. Peace love and the freedom to free-base and smoke mad herb. Now it is filled with rejects on every corner, asking if you can pull their cock for a dollar so they can add it to their savings fund for a Miller High Life. If you don’t contribute, they call you a rich prick and spit on the ground while they stroke their dog Ginger that is wrapped in hemp rope. Still don’t know why they all have nice dogs.

Everyone and their mama daughter had a DLSR that day. Not as photogenic as Bay To Breakers but everyone had their gear in hand.

Funniest corner of the day goes to Haight and Clayton street. Hecklers with a sense of humor.

Apparently I don’t stay down on hip-hop no more. Do you know who Knobody is? From not knowing, dude is the new addition to the Heiro camp. Shit must be hard for an MC. He was getting down in the nitty gritty of self promoting and actually MCing on a flatbed truck towards the end of the festival, gathering the loose end pedestrians that were fleeing to the bus stops. I guess you got to do what you got to do to get your name out.

“Wit life in the pen, every page a breath, my last days, so its only a coupla pages left, I said fuck it, raise the stakes, I done made my bets, I’m all in, I’ll see ya struggle & I raise u stress.” – Knobody / What U Think

BACK TO THE BERG
May 30, 2009 – 11:39 pm | 3 Comments | submitted by fongstarr

To this day, people ask me why I like love skateboarding at my age. No one will ever get it but the people alike. It’s not a fucking sport, it’s not a stupid game….it’s a lifestyle and a culture. You respect the talent that are in the business and understand (to a certain degree) what it takes to chuck yourself down a distance of 21 feet, only to splash into the hard concrete that doesn’t give for nothing. There is only so many bails you can take before you realize that you are that much closer to committing suicide.

My mother would ask me who still does this stuff in there late 20’s. She has no idea how wrong she is. Majority of the pros today are still flippin’ boards in their 30’s and even in their 40’s. And it is never the age that matters. Look at the hundreds of people that came out to this event. People from teens to fathers with kids all came out for one common thing….and that is the love of skateboarding.

The paparazzi shots begin. Jake Phelps (aka The Phelphers). Probably considered one of the biggest dickheads in skateboarding but with Thrasher on his back, he helps create one of the biggest contest in skateboard history.

Greg Myers (DC Shoes), Jamie Thomas (Zero) and Geoff Rowley (Flip)

Tony Trujillo a.k.a. TNT (Anti-Hero), Mike Carroll (Girl) and Braydon Szafranski (Baker)

Wednesdays with Reda (The Berrics). Unfortunately I don’t think he was filming an episode.

Johnny Layton (Toy Machine) ***switch 360 flip*** no make

Billy Marks (Toy Machine) ***nollie-flip*** no make

Chris Cole (Zero) ***switch frontside-flip*** make!

The crowd disperses and the judges read it….Chris Cole is announced the winner landing a never before done backside 360 and a switch frontside flip down Wallenburg. $6000 in his pocket in only two hours of his time.

Gotta love the product toss for the kids.

And coming to a shop near you. Omar Salazar’s signature Nike SB shoe with fly-wire technology!

BAY TO BREAKERS 2009
May 28, 2009 – 9:03 pm | One Comment | submitted by fongstarr

27 years of my existence on this earth and I have never ever been to a Bay To Breakers. I have no idea what swayed me the other direction. Full male nudity? Penis on parade? Yeah, that always got me stuck on stupid cause I never got what made people want to show their trojan horse in public. But the best way to describe this event is a west coast Mardi Gra with more sun and more interesting costumes. Honestly it was one of the coolest things I have ever been too. To just drink in public amongst the plethora of happy people is just such a joy. People doing wine bongs, beer shotguns, or even taking some hard liqs to the face. I am coming correct next year now that I know what’s up.

“I am bouncin’ on my toes, watch me super soak dat ho!”

The technodrome from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with a Filipino Krang to match.

Toward the end of all the hijinks, Fell Street was left with just a massive mess of cups, cans and bottles.

I had to back out of the festivities a little early to shoot over to 3rd and Army to get the last glimpse of the Fallen Footwear demo. Nothing really too exciting but as we all know, skateboarding is like a deep passion, so just seeing these guys push was a cool feat.

Tommy Sandoval absolutely destroyed!

SAN FRANCISCO SKATE PLAZA DESIGNS
May 15, 2009 – 11:39 am | 5 Comments | submitted by fongstarr

Holy hell! I was talking to the manager at DLX about this and I guess he just leaked the photos on the site. This will be the first true street skate park in the general Bay Area. If this thing gets built, it would be mad chaos ever day seeing how SF is on a major lock down on every popular skate spot. They even kind of did a od to EMB as well. So much better then the Potrero park that was built a while back. We’ll see how things turn out.
