This is a easy formula, and apparently something that will be happening almost every weekend in the summer. Close a street, get food vendors, music and trinkets to sell, post up fliers and posters about it and watch as hundreds of people come out to have a good time.

Haight Street used to be the hippie epicenter. Peace love and the freedom to free-base and smoke mad herb. Now it is filled with rejects on every corner, asking if you can pull their cock for a dollar so they can add it to their savings fund for a Miller High Life. If you don’t contribute, they call you a rich prick and spit on the ground while they stroke their dog Ginger that is wrapped in hemp rope. Still don’t know why they all have nice dogs.

Everyone and their mama daughter had a DLSR that day. Not as photogenic as Bay To Breakers but everyone had their gear in hand.

Funniest corner of the day goes to Haight and Clayton street. Hecklers with a sense of humor.

Apparently I don’t stay down on hip-hop no more. Do you know who Knobody is? From not knowing, dude is the new addition to the Heiro camp. Shit must be hard for an MC. He was getting down in the nitty gritty of self promoting and actually MCing on a flatbed truck towards the end of the festival, gathering the loose end pedestrians that were fleeing to the bus stops. I guess you got to do what you got to do to get your name out.

“Wit life in the pen, every page a breath, my last days, so its only a coupla pages left, I said fuck it, raise the stakes, I done made my bets, I’m all in, I’ll see ya struggle & I raise u stress.” – Knobody / What U Think

BACK TO THE BERG

To this day, people ask me why I like love skateboarding at my age. No one will ever get it but the people alike. It’s not a fucking sport, it’s not a stupid game….it’s a lifestyle and a culture. You respect the talent that are in the business and understand (to a certain degree) what it takes to chuck yourself down a distance of 21 feet, only to splash into the hard concrete that doesn’t give for nothing. There is only so many bails you can take before you realize that you are that much closer to committing suicide.

My mother would ask me who still does this stuff in there late 20’s. She has no idea how wrong she is. Majority of the pros today are still flippin’ boards in their 30’s and even in their 40’s. And it is never the age that matters. Look at the hundreds of people that came out to this event. People from teens to fathers with kids all came out for one common thing….and that is the love of skateboarding.

The paparazzi shots begin. Jake Phelps (aka The Phelphers). Probably considered one of the biggest dickheads in skateboarding but with Thrasher on his back, he helps create one of the biggest contest in skateboard history.

Greg Myers (DC Shoes), Jamie Thomas (Zero) and Geoff Rowley (Flip)

Tony Trujillo a.k.a. TNT (Anti-Hero), Mike Carroll (Girl) and Braydon Szafranski (Baker)

Wednesdays with Reda (The Berrics). Unfortunately I don’t think he was filming an episode.

Johnny Layton (Toy Machine) ***switch 360 flip*** no make

Billy Marks (Toy Machine) ***nollie-flip*** no make

Chris Cole (Zero) ***switch frontside-flip*** make!

The crowd disperses and the judges read it….Chris Cole is announced the winner landing a never before done backside 360 and a switch frontside flip down Wallenburg. $6000 in his pocket in only two hours of his time.

Gotta love the product toss for the kids.

And coming to a shop near you. Omar Salazar’s signature Nike SB shoe with fly-wire technology!

BAY TO BREAKERS 2009

27 years of my existence on this earth and I have never ever been to a Bay To Breakers. I have no idea what swayed me the other direction. Full male nudity? Penis on parade? Yeah, that always got me stuck on stupid cause I never got what made people want to show their trojan horse in public. But the best way to describe this event is a west coast Mardi Gra with more sun and more interesting costumes. Honestly it was one of the coolest things I have ever been too. To just drink in public amongst the plethora of happy people is just such a joy. People doing wine bongs, beer shotguns, or even taking some hard liqs to the face. I am coming correct next year now that I know what’s up.

“I am bouncin’ on my toes, watch me super soak dat ho!”

The technodrome from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with a Filipino Krang to match.

Toward the end of all the hijinks, Fell Street was left with just a massive mess of cups, cans and bottles.

I had to back out of the festivities a little early to shoot over to 3rd and Army to get the last glimpse of the Fallen Footwear demo. Nothing really too exciting but as we all know, skateboarding is like a deep passion, so just seeing these guys push was a cool feat.

Tommy Sandoval absolutely destroyed!

SAN FRANCISCO SKATE PLAZA DESIGNS
Holy hell! I was talking to the manager at DLX about this and I guess he just leaked the photos on the site. This will be the first true street skate park in the general Bay Area. If this thing gets built, it would be mad chaos ever day seeing how SF is on a major lock down on every popular skate spot. They even kind of did a od to EMB as well. So much better then the Potrero park that was built a while back. We’ll see how things turn out.

COME RIDE WITH ME

On a fine beautiful Saturday morning, I dropped by DLXSF to check out some of the new goods as well as talk to the crew. Spoke to the Rasa Libre designer there that just launched the new site and even some local photography savs that shoot for the infamous Low Card zine.

Pretty much nationwide now, the new Stefan Janoski’s should be at all your finer skate shop retailers. These are the brown joints that released with the black ones as well. Limited to the first batch, the shoe also came with some cork insoles as the Janoski family has it’s foot in the wine industry. Comes in a sweet wine bag too.

Spoke to the manager at DLX and he gave me the scoop that the Fallen team will be in the house next Sunday. A signing with all your favorite Zero goons as well as a small demo at 3rd and Army right after.

Walked down Market St. a few blocks down to catch the Civic Center Bart and realized I was near the Market Street Gallery.

Actually someone at my work told me about this as I was carrying some decks to work. Just a little local show with a great cause. 50 artists doing hand custom painted skateboard decks in helps to raise money for the homeless youth in the Tenderloin.

Drove down with Maria to Fort Miley area to stretch out our legs out in the nice weather with the slight wind chill factor.

The Legion Of Honor.

One day when I stop drinking and eating scraps on the daily, I’ll save some money to go on a trip to Europe to see some real art. Not graffiti, not weak ass chicken scratch…. but REAL ART. Where people dedicated their livelihood to practice something that brought no real physical treasures, but only pride and satisfaction of accomplishing something that takes real mastery and skill. One day….

Later on we drove back to the heart of city to check out Ian Johnson’s new art show and get my board signed. Full coverage here.

And what a better way to end the night. Steaks, some veggies, sangria and a HBO special. What a great day! Can’t wait for the sun to bring out some real heat. I am ready for it.

CONVERSE X JOHN MINARDI

My buddy and fellow SF State Alumni John Minardi just informed me of his Converse shoe that he help create for the Converse (RED) campaign that they have going on. A hundred artists were specifically picked for their art and idea for their shoe and he was fortunate to be one of them. I know sneaker heads will think these are kind of bogus to rock but if you look at it from a designer’s perspective, it’s kind of cool to just have a shoe in general, let alone be a Converse one.

Here’s the original drawing John did for the shoe. I actually have seen in it person and regardless of what people think of the art, it looks pretty damn clean. Doodling is actually kind of a hard art form to perfect and John unknowingly does it with ease. Congrats dude! I got my pair coming soon.
