Glow:Dark
November 5, 2009 – 10:59 pm | No Comment | submitted by jmartinez

I’ve been hooked to photo books since I worked on the Japan photo book – But not just any photo book. When Kanye West announced the 288 pages photo book of his Glow in the Dark tour, I pre-order the book through Amazon.

KANYE WEST: GLOW IN THE DARK

I have shot 2 concert before (N.E.R.D. x LupeandG-Shock x Kanye West), both of these concerts I was just a spectator, I didn’t have a media credential nor full access to back stage or photographers pit or any sort of clearance to get “good shots”

KANYE WEST: GLOW IN THE DARK

KANYE WEST: GLOW IN THE DARK

I feel inspired by Nabil Elderkin who photographs are showcased in this book – from the different angle used on stage and off stage – to capturing the moment, Nabil was able to capture the “Glow in the Dark”

Landed last night @ LAX (2hrs delay from JFK got me a late arrival – Thanks to AA!). Just got to the track a few hours ago – Practice starts around 3pm, so I decided to walk the paddock and see whats going on.

We had the whole month of Sept off (no FD) so everyone is itching for some smoke, speed and a whole lot of WALL/BANK!!!
Pretty much Chris Forsberg got the championship locked down, he needs to qualify decently and advance to top 16/top 8 and he will be crown 2009 Formula Drift Champion. It seems like Formula Drift and Formula One are on the same page with Button leading and Barichello close behind (hence Chris Forsberg and Ryan Tureck) both DA team mates and close friend!

I wanna see some upsets this weekend – maybe leaving all up in the table and see who can fight till the end!
More pictures @ my flickr account – I will keep uploading photos during the weekend on my flickr!

From Still to Motion
October 15, 2009 – 1:02 am | One Comment | submitted by jmartinez

Yes, that’s my goal for next year, while photography is my main/stronger focus point, I want to be able to shoot video now that most of the DSLR are able to capture HD video. This type of media is not as easy as photography, I personally think that is hard for photographer to switch onto video than someone starting with video and moving into still photography.

I could spend an hour to put a gallery together – from sorting the batch of photos, to selecting desired/selected images, to editing and posting. However, with video you will have to make a full composition in order to tell the story from beginning to end. This doesn’t include learning new applications, (ie. Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier, etc) selecting the right soundtrack to go with the video, color correcting the video, encoding, etc.

On the other hand, some photographer have adapted to the DSLR video capturing capabilities to their advantage. Take for example:

Documentary on Afghanistan shot by Danfung Dennis. He says “The footage was shot on a custom built rig, using a Canon 5D Mark II, 24-70 f/2.8 L lens, Sennheiser ME-66 and G2 wireless system, Singh-Ray variable ND filter, and Beachtek 2XAs mounted on a Glidecam 2000 HD with custom made aluminum ‘wings.’”

The next one comes from Surf photographer Yassine (Yazzy) Ouhilal:

This two documentary were shot with Canon EOS 5DMKII – I currently own the Canon EOS 7D and I haven’t used the full advantage of the video capabilities yet, I have shot some 720p video clips to use it in the future but when it comes to editing I will wait until I get to more experience/knowledge with the camera.

In the end, I might not make a full switch from stills to motion, maybe I will make some feature video here and there, I just need to ensure that quality of the video is up to part with my photography and that video editing is up to part with today’s standards. Hence Phillip, Will Roegge, Josh Herron, etc – (not that I’m trying to bring them some heat, ya know?)

Editorial: An apology for Internet relationships
October 10, 2009 – 3:15 am | One Comment | submitted by jmartinez

Thousands of years ago, our ancestors drew onto cave walls. That was their way of sharing feelings and aspirations. Communication methods have evolved since, but some things never change. Love still is the greatest feeling, when it’s not the worst.

Just ten years ago social networks didn’t exist in the extent they do today. Friendster, MySpace and Facebook didn’t launch until 2002, 2003 and 2004, respectively — just to name three from a myriad offerings available. The foundation of these websites is the ever-present urge to stay in touch with friends, relatives and lovers. Online dating also saw a tremendous increase in user base over the last years. At first, one has to wonder how dating can work without the essential flirting. On a website you don’t flirt; you simply click on the potential partner and perhaps write an affectionate message. Principally though, the selection process is no different than in a real-life situation. Beauty, character traits and hobbies are still the criteria that determine the eventuality of a relationship.

Instead of wooing a woman with lustful gazes, a few well-chosen words could express one’s passion with equal persuasiveness. Rejection still occurs, though. When you walk up to a lonely girl, sitting at a bar, sipping a cocktail with ennui, you either lure her in or not. From the perspective of the female sex, it certainly is a different story, since women often expect us, the desperate men, to start a conversation. The outcome of the ensuing dialogue is always inevitable; either it’s a success or the two people continue drinking their drinks alone.

The first step to a successful internet relationship is to stop labeling it abnormal. We must agree on one point: to have friends one the world-wide-web means also to diverge from the norm. The thoughts of fellow Neowin staff members imply the ease of reconnecting with long-lost friends as the true appeal of social networks.

Weird people do exist in this yet so small world. The advances of technology have only made it simpler to meet these creepy characters. However, let’s not want to dwell on possible negative endings. Blame yourself if you get hurt online; when one purchases an item on Ebay, the same rule applies: caveat emptor.

To make a case for the benefits of internet relationships, allow me to tell a story. Five years ago, I signed up in some geek forum, wanting to connect with other Star Wars fans. I recall having lots of fun chats with anonymous avatars. As weeks and months passed, often burning the midnight oils, I began to develop a bond with one user. I’m meeting her in person for the first time in November.

Of-times it’s so hard to look someone in the eye and speak the truth. An online friend, who is just remotely aware of your condition, can provide useful and objective advice. To be unemotional is impossible for close friends or relatives, for that matter. They care too much; now, this shouldn’t imply that online friends don’t care for your troubles. Yet they do in a dispassionate and controlled manner.

It will be captivating still, to finally see her in real-life. After five years of chatting and speaking on the phone, we may think we know one another. The knowledge of our pasts notwithstanding, there’s still so much more to a person of flesh and blood, than there is to an entity that’s made up only by your imagination and whatever you choose to believe. Beyond the stories we shared and fun chats we had, there is a real person yet unrevealed.

The breaking point for online acquaintances is whether one chooses to meet in person. That’s when everything can go wrong, or even surpass expectations. It seems to be a matter of choice. What decides the outcome of an online relationship is what you choose to do with it. Either you simply want an uncomplicated relationship, to be able to talk about all kinds of things, personal and general; or, you look to meet new people, intent on making new friends in real-life, too.

Sitting in front of the computer, wherever you are, limits your vision. For that precise moment the world exists within the confines of your computer screen. It does diminish your awareness of what’s around you, and suddenly this online friend becomes real.

We must reconsider the meaning of the word ‘stranger’. A stranger is someone you might talk to on the street, when asking what time it is. A stranger is the one waiting in line in front of and behind you at the local grocery store. A stranger is everyone mingling at the shopping malls. A stranger is also everyone you meet online, in point of fact. Yet, the definition of a word can change. It’s wrong to declare someone a stranger, just because you meet them in a virtual chat room or a website.
Thoughts, dreams and aspirations can unite people. There are of course other reasons which are less philosophical. Since the advent of MMOs you can complete quests together with online friends, and this adds a whole new layer of complexity to the idea of online friendships. This also gives the word ‘stranger’ a new meaning — internationality has become the catchphrase of the internet.

Computers, iPhones, and other mobile devices ushered in an era of incessant connectivity. Anyone who doesn’t embrace this new way of life risks being excluded. The push forward, both in business and personal matters, relies on our ability to stay in touch with relatives, friends and colleagues. To cut a long story short, online relationships don’t have to be motivated by sex, but can simply be an exercise in collaboration. Who hasn’t teamed up with fellow students, to work on a joint project? Our own Neowin Linux distribution Shift was also created by an enthusiastic group of developers around the world. It was a communal effort, and it resulted in a functional Linux distribution that could be downloaded by anyone.

Lastly, it’s language itself which signifies the authenticity of online chats. It’s possible to discern the character of a person from the way they express themselves. A cynic chooses different words than a pedophile. One or the other will be more eloquent, and that indicates whether your chat partner is a geek or an academic or some horny guy who can never be a great conversationalist.

Now it’s up to you, as a member of this community to share your story and thoughts. Perhaps illustrate also the bad things which can happen. So far, my experiences were always positive; we have all read a few horrible stories, though.

Terminal Man
September 19, 2009 – 12:21 pm | Comments Off | submitted by jmartinez

Meet Brendan Ross, Wired.com’s Terminal Man. The 28-year-old Texan is waiting for the feds to grant a security clearance so he can begin working as an air traffic controller. Until the FAA makes sure he’s never applied for a position with the North Korean government, Brendan has no money, no responsibilities and a severe case of wanderlust. He figured jetting around for a month would pass the time, but he couldn’t swing the ticket. We got wind of him after reading his funny Craigslist ad and offered him a job blogging about his adventures exploring JetBlue’s route map.

After watching F1 Qualifying and looking at Kimi Raikkonen’s helmet, I wanted to get a closer look at his design and see which F1 driver has the best or coolest design…

So, here you have Kimi’s Helmet

while browsing through the helmets designs and special one off (Liveries) race helmets, I came across the 2008 Monaco GP helmets… Now we stepped up to Diamonds status.

One-OFF
September 5, 2009 – 2:47 am | 4 Comments | submitted by jmartinez

For now… its a One – OFF.

Finally got around on finishing the Japan Photo Book and let me tell you, this is a challenge that I set myself to finish the book with the best quality possible while keeping it clean, simple yet creative. Its hard sorting through thousands of pictures (not only digital but also Film), resizing them and creating some sort of sense while keeping the reader flipping through the pages.

Before I left to Formula Drift Sonoma I had some photos edited and re-sized but I had been re-sizing the photos with the wrong measurements which set me back a whole week. Once I got back to NYC I worked around the clock for the last 3-4 days to get this done and Sent to WHCC (White House Custom Colour) and look at the final results.

I have never done a book and I was not aware of how much work this type of project requires. One thing I’m certain, this one will not be the last one. This book cost more than I expected but at the same time the book measure 14×11 @ 80+ pages with a Dust Jacket.

This is how the final result should look like – Starting with a Print Screen of the Dust Jacket – Photoshop CS4

Dust Jacket - Photo Book - CS4

Then, Half way through the book you will find something like this – the Intro to the 35mm photos

Film Intro - Photo Book

The Negative Scan are untouched – only re-sized to fit the book and added a black border to give it a more “Clean/Simple” look to it.

Film Pages - Photo Book

And this is a bit of a secret but there will be 3 panoramic shots in the book – Lay the book open and you will get something like this…

Digital Panoramic - Photo Book

Click on the images to view them larger

Should have the book in hands by Tuesday Sept 8th (next week)… by then I should get an Idea of a bigger production and more affordable printed book for Friends & Family.

Stay tuned,

j.martinez

Its been a while since I last post anything, I’ve been busy with traveling, Formula Drift, my full time job & working on future projects/events.

I have also put aside the Japan photo book (which I should have had it by now) because I had too much stuff on my plate and not enough time. However, I can promise ya’ll that is going to be better than I expected….
I’ve been thinking on working on a better project, maybe… lets say; FD ‘09 photo Book with exclusive behind the scene pictures? sized at 11×14 inches?? well, this is something that I would like to take on after the season is done…

but for now, I will just leave you guys with a B&W collage of last weekend in Sonoma, CA.

I don’t know if this is real – it looks like he’s not really there. Maybe someone video’d the store looking around the a laptop area and then he filmed on green screen and put that video on it. the lighting or placement doesn’t seem to look right.

but even if is not real, is quite genius! – Apple needs to offer this kid a commercial deal. Kanye/Jay-Z/Diddy and the rest of them NYC kats should offer this kid a record deal or at least a scholarship or somethin’
