From Still to Motion
Yes, that’s my goal for next year, while photography is my main/stronger focus point, I want to be able to shoot video now that most of the DSLR are able to capture HD video. This type of media is not as easy as photography, I personally think that is hard for photographer to switch onto video than someone starting with video and moving into still photography.
I could spend an hour to put a gallery together – from sorting the batch of photos, to selecting desired/selected images, to editing and posting. However, with video you will have to make a full composition in order to tell the story from beginning to end. This doesn’t include learning new applications, (ie. Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier, etc) selecting the right soundtrack to go with the video, color correcting the video, encoding, etc.
On the other hand, some photographer have adapted to the DSLR video capturing capabilities to their advantage. Take for example:
Documentary on Afghanistan shot by Danfung Dennis. He says “The footage was shot on a custom built rig, using a Canon 5D Mark II, 24-70 f/2.8 L lens, Sennheiser ME-66 and G2 wireless system, Singh-Ray variable ND filter, and Beachtek 2XAs mounted on a Glidecam 2000 HD with custom made aluminum ‘wings.’”
The next one comes from Surf photographer Yassine (Yazzy) Ouhilal:
This two documentary were shot with Canon EOS 5DMKII – I currently own the Canon EOS 7D and I haven’t used the full advantage of the video capabilities yet, I have shot some 720p video clips to use it in the future but when it comes to editing I will wait until I get to more experience/knowledge with the camera.
In the end, I might not make a full switch from stills to motion, maybe I will make some feature video here and there, I just need to ensure that quality of the video is up to part with my photography and that video editing is up to part with today’s standards. Hence Phillip, Will Roegge, Josh Herron, etc – (not that I’m trying to bring them some heat, ya know?)
