Another SEMA has passed and I can finally take a short breath. Each year the who’s who of the automotive world gather and despite this being a very slow year there were still thousands of people that made the journey to Las Vegas. As always it was great to check out the cars and hang out with some old friends. Here is a short re-cap of the show.

the LF-A is amazing in person and thanks to Lexus for the mojito

Every year Formula DRIFT holds their annual press conference and this year was no different. The news that was unveiled included the tentative 2010 schedule (same 7 seven venues), the Formula DRIFT Asia Cup consisting of 3 competitions, TV programming remaining with VERSUS, the addition of NOS Energy Drink as the official energy drink of the series for the next 2 years, and the return of the Red Bull Drifting World Championship. Every year new cars and drivers are debuted and this year there will be the addition of a BMW 330 driven by Michael Essa, a Chevy Camaro driven by Conrad Grunewald, and a Nissan GTR driven by Robbie Nishida. It’s going to be another exciting season.

Tentative 2010 Formula D schedule

Hankook GTR

Hankook Chevy Camaro

We helped bring XBOX 360 and Turn 10 Studios to SEMA for their first time. The launch of Forza Motorsport 3 less than a few weeks ago made it the perfect time for the gaming world to meet the automotive world. A booth complete with gaming stations and simulators helped grab the attention of the tradeshow guests. And strategically placed decals on booth vehicles and featured vehicles helped give a presence for the gaming franchise.

This GTR was displayed in the Jonari booth and owned by Brian Gee (thanks for the Forza love)

BB Squad

The Hyundai booth also contained a Forza Motorsport 3 gaming station and announced that Rhys Millen’s Red Bull Hyundai Genesis coupe from Formula DRIFT will be added to the game. Speaking of Rhys, he and his team at RMR produced this sleeper mid-engine V8 powered Genesis…just crazy!

SEMA wouldn’t be complete without the after-event parties and this year I attended the Formula DRIFT party at the Bank in Bellagio, the 0-60 / Rides Magazine party at Jet, industry night at the Hard Rock’s Body English to see Pete Tong, and even some wheel party where E-40 performed.

This year the show went by very quickly and I often found it hard to find time just to grab a quick bite to eat, but here are some photos of the small sampling of cars from the show:

We hosted the Forza Motorsport 3 Launch event at the CEC showroom in Santa Monica. The showroom became the perfect setting for this game’s launch as it was filled with high-end cars including a very sexy Ferrari 559 and a Techart Porsche, many wheels, and motorsport memorabilia on display.

The focal point of the evening became Forza Motorsport 3 itself with multiple consoles and flat screens in the showroom that allowed guests to play the yet to be released game. Guests included media, VIPs, a couple celebs, and of course a few drivers.

From Formula DRIFT we had Ryan Tuerck, Rhys Millen, Daijiro Yoshihara, Stephan Verdier, and judge Tony Angelo drop by.

It was great to catch up with everyone and it reminded me of a SEMA event with the high level of industry attendees. Good to see some of these guys out of the “work” environment as well.

We even had a few friends from the fashion scene come out to check out the event including James Bond (UNDFTD), Jon Chase (DSTRYR), Chris Hull (Alpinestars), Ryan and Kingson (Meister), Veny (Famous Stars and Straps) and even the Attic boys came by.

Even a few random celebs stopped by including actor Shemar Moore, Paulie from LA Ink, and the one and only RJ deVera haha.

Another season has passed for Formula DRIFT. Congratulations to Chris Forsberg and the team for a very well deserved championship. This event was one of the largest events ever with a sold out crowd of over 10,000 attending. I had over 250 media members alone apply for credentials…just crazy.

It was a very long and busy week from pre-event to event to post-event the work never seems to end. The Hundreds came out to check out what drifting is all about (showcasing the cross-over appeal of streetwear and motorsports.) We also brought out the Famous Stars and Straps stunt bike team and they did a demo for all the fans.

All of the FD drivers autographed a custom Sparco suit for the family of the late Shaun Carlson.

Some jumbo branding on-site

Ernie from NOS Energy looked nervous as Chris battled to make it into the Top 16, which would clinch his title. Even though Ryan Tuerck who was sitting in 2nd place would take the victory, Chris had enough points (just 6) to win the championship (there was a scenario that with some magic turnout they could of both potentially tied – glad that didn’t happen as it would of stirred up some controversy.) So from the judging tower I decided to text Ernie with, “Nervous?!” as he anxiously waited for the results of the battle. I don’t blame him for his anxiety as he has backed Chris Forsberg for years and it finally all paid of. Congrats to the NOS team.

Now that the season has officially wrapped up it’s time to head into SEMA, which should be very interesting.

Tomorrow may be the very last Import Showoff car show. This is a sad day as it’s an end of an era. For 15 years Import Showoff was the most respected car show in the nation and helped start the import tuning car scene way back in 1994. If you won at Import Showoff that meant you deserved to win and your car was basically the “shit”. Ken Miyoshi, the founder of Import Showoff, helped build a generation of car enthusiasts and helped spark the tuning movement that paved the way for many companies and even careers, mine included. For those that don’t I started as a car show fan turned Tuner and haven’t looked back since. Eventually, my hobby became my work and long story short that’s why I still work in the automotive industry.

This news has given me some new motivation to weed through the old hard drives and CD’s (before memory sticks and thumb drives were popular) to find the images from the good old days of car shows. Car shows including Import Showoff and Hot Import Nights easily took up 3 years of my life, but in that 3 years I was able to forge great friendships and relationships that still exist. So after Formula DRIFT Round 6: Locked and Loaded in Sonoma next weekend I will be sure to post some photos from the Garage Life archive.

But wait, the producers of Import Showoff are back with a new show called “Mega Matsuri” (Mega – Short for Large: megadose, Surpassing other examples of its kind; extraordinary:
Matsuri – Japanese for “Festival” Derived from a verb meaning ‘to attend to’, ‘to entertain’)

Too bad I’ll be in Sonoma that weekend, but if you’re in the LA area be sure to check it out. Car show, car parts on sale, Ruckus, Fixies…

Last week I brought Formula DRIFT drivers Dai Yoshihara, Rhys Millen, and Chris Forsberg to Turn 10 Studios, the makers of Forza Motorsport, in Seattle. The next edition of the popular series will launch in October and we were able to get a behind the scenes tour on the making of the game. The tour started with a demo on the game play and graphics. The game features the ability to change everything from tire pressure to designing your own car graphics and has over 400 vehicles to use. But we brought both Import Tuner and CarDomain.com to cover the technical aspects of the game.

Here is my behind the scenes tour of Turn 10.

Rhys, Dai, and Chris at the Studio

The creative space complete with Foosball and Kegerator.

Where the magic happens.

For the rest of the Tour…

Rhys checks out the game storyboard

Each track was carefully created to the smallest detail

Test exhaust from the various vehicles for the most realistic sounds (one guy literally sits all day in a sound proof room listening to all the sounds to make sure they are just right to the very last turbo blow-off noise)

Dai attempts to drift in the game testing out the game control, check out his left foot braking

Chris does the same and said it was very realistic, but he does much better in real life

A drifting demo video was shown that took a year to produce. It’s pretty crazy and I can’t wait to see what people can do with Forza 3 as it’s even more detailed and the game play is more advanced. Cars / Players were positioned as clipping points and even as camera cars to capture all this footage…since there is battle damage if one run was done incorrectly they had to reset and start over each time…thus the year to produce. Maybe a Formula D version soon?

The game makers are also huge car nuts and memorabilia was everywhere

A signature worth a billion…

August 10, 2009

Formula DRIFT Round 5: Breaking Point Results;
Chris Forsberg Takes the Victory and Maintains the Championship Points Lead

Long Beach, Calif. – August 10, 2009 – Formula DRIFT returned to Evergreen Speedway for Round 5: Breaking Point in Monroe, WA. Chris Forsberg in the NOS Energy / Maxxis Tires Nissan 350Z takes the victory and maintains the lead in the Formula DRIFT Championship Points race. Forsberg also maintains the lead for the Tires.com Triple Crown bonus prize.

“What an unbelievable finish to a great weekend,” said Chris Forsberg, winner of Round 5: Breaking Point and Formula DRIFT Championship Points leader. “We were leading the points chase for the series and the Tires.com Triple Crown and just wanted a strong finish. We could not have asked for a better turnout this weekend.”

The 2-day weekend event treated the fans to both Formula DRIFT Championship action and a Pro Am competition. The drivers came prepared for any weather conditions at Evergreen Speedway as this venue hosted the first rain event in Formula DRIFT history last season, but the event remained dry all weekend with cool weather. With only 3 events remaining in the season the pressure was on for the drivers to make their mark and didn’t fail to disappoint the excited crowd.

Vaughn Gittin in the Falken Tires Ford Racing Mustang GT and Eric O’Sullivan in the Hankook / Rockstar Subaru WRX put on an exciting match, which had O’Sullivan moving on to the Finals, but would fail to run due to damage from the previous round giving Forsberg the victory. Tyler McQuarrie in the Falken Tires Nissan 350Z and Gittin fought for 3rd place and after an intense battle McQuarrie would come out on top of his Falken Tires teammate. Entering the event with the points lead, Chris Forsberg was a marked man and battled through the tough competition meeting McQuarrie in semi-finals and proved to be one of the most entertaining match-ups of the evening with both drivers putting it all on the line with their fast entry and great angle along the banking of the course. Forsberg got the best of McQuarrie in the battle of the 350Z and took home his second victory of the season, which also was the 2nd event of the Tires.com Triple Crown in which he also won the 1st event at Road Atlanta.

“It’s hard to describe the Seattle event in words. I can only say that with all the excitement and drama that unfolds on track its hard to imagine the story we are seeing could even come out of Hollywood,” said Ryan Sage, vice president of marketing and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “The championship is on and there are more than a few drivers that can still take the championship going into Round 6: Locked and Loaded at Infineon Raceway.”

Formula DRIFT returns to Infineon Raceway for Round 6: Locked and Loaded later this month on August 21-22. This is a special event with Formula DRIFT joining the IndyCar weekend. The best drifters in the world will share the track with the best drivers in the world including Helio Castroneves, Danica Patrick, and Scott Dixon. Ticket packages are available now.

Despite Economy, Businesses Still Spending in Motorsports
by Dan Frio (thanks Dan!)

It may be the worst economy seen in several generations, but companies are still spending money marketing their brands in motorsports. It’s an idea that might give most CEOs insomnia. Slashing marketing budgets in downturns is custom. But to then spend those fewer dollars in motorsports sponsorships, never a cheap arena to begin with?

Foolhardy.

Not so, say some marketers. For companies that can stomach the risk, downturns provide an opportunity to capture market share at the expense of cautious rivals.

“Motorsports is a very important avenue for us,” says Nick Fousekis, Falken Tire Senior Manager Consumer Marketing. “It’s another opportunity to get in front of people that already know, or may not know, our brand. They can see that we’re not just a tire manufacturer peddling black, round objects. We’re out there. We’re active.”

As 2009 opened, the motorsports headlines were not encouraging.

To read the rest of the article

NASCAR entered the year missing major sponsors including Home Depot, Kodak, Enterprise, and Domino’s Pizza, leaving the series with 10 fewer partners than three years ago, according to the Sports Business Journal.

Motor Trend reported that Chrysler would reduce its NASCAR spending by 30 percent, and the Indy Racing League cancelled the Detroit Grand Prix. Audi and Porsche pulled out of American Le Mans, while Subaru, the brand that practically defined the World Rally Championship, withdrew from that series.

Even the rarified air of Formula 1 suffered the exit of Honda’s factory team and key sponsorships from global financial institutions.

But for a company and brand like NOS Energy Drink, motorsports marketing is a no-brainer.

“Everything we do goes into motorsports,” says Tutul Rahman, Brand Manager for NOS Energy Drink. “The only way we grow the brand is by increasing our investment.”

Rahman says the motorsports presence helped grow the brand more than 50% in 2008. Launched in 2005 through a licensing partnership between Fuze Beverage and Holley Performance Products, owners of Nitrous Oxide Systems, NOS Energy Drink was the sixth best-selling energy drink in the U.S., according to 2008 Nielsen data.

That growth has made the drink maker, now a subsidiary of Coca-Cola, solvent enough to expand into NASCAR sponsorships. For 2009, the company is sponsoring driver Kyle Busch, along with other drivers in other disciplines under a group banner called Team NOS.

The Busch sponsorship includes a 22 oz. plastic bottle, trimmed in the brand’s blue and orange colors and that mimics the look of a nitrous oxide bottle, dubbed the Rowdy Can.

Team NOS also includes Formula Drift pilot Chris Forsberg, and rally driver Andrew Comrie-Picard. Even the popular Chicago-area Mitsubishi tuning shop AMS receives project support from NOS Energy Drink. The AMS crew intends to build a record-breaking Evolution IX for the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The consistent thread through all of the brand’s sponsorships, says Marketing and Lifestyle Manager Ernie Manasala, is a commitment to the brand’s core value: maximum performance.

The NASCAR involvement, however, is a new step forward for NOS Energy Drink.

“[NASCAR sponsorship] is really an evolution of the brand,” Rahman says. “We started out very core and grassroots with Hot Import Nights and Formula D. As the brand grows, our motorsports sponsorships expand as well. Now we’re going into NASCAR and touching millions of people that way.”

And where NASCAR represents an opportunity for NOS Energy Drink to reach mass eyeballs, a smaller series like Formula Drift can offer marketers a more targeted and qualified audience. While a Formula Drift might feel the pain of sponsor withdrawls more acutely than a NASCAR or Indy Racing League, they’re a good sell for brands that want to capitalize on the absence of a competitor.

“[Formula D] gives us a great opportunity to activate on site,” Fousekis says. As one of the series’ three tire manufacturer sponsors, Falken goes big at events: two 53-foot rigs offer four awnings, two used by the pit crew to service five sponsored cars, the other two used for activation, entertainment and hospitality.

If industry research is any indication, Fousekis is on the right path.

A study released by Foresight Research earlier this year probed the depth of motorsports influence on purchasing decisions. According to the study, 43 percent of new car and truck buyers had watched at least one motorsports event in the past year. Fourteen percent had attended an event and 23 percent said that motorsports had at least some influence on their buying decision.

Additionally, 67 percent of those influenced by motorsports said that power and performance was a key message. And 59 percent of those who’d attended a motorsports event learned about a specific make and model from visiting a manufacturer’s display at the event.

The study also found the pervasive influence of “Shouters,” motorsports fans who influence the purchase decisions of others. This group reported giving an average of 10 new vehicle recommendations per year to other people.

“With proper activation, motorsport sponsorships offer a great opportunity for communicating to shoppers in an emotional and rational way, and don’t lose sight of the word-of-mouth recommendations by these Shouters,” says Foresight CEO Steve Bruyn.

The message is clear: motorsports marketing still sells cars and parts.

Even with industry research behind him and other like-minded marketers, Fousekis also has a slight advantage when making his marketing budget case. Racing is in Falken’s roots, he says. Whether testing at Nurburgring or competing in Japan’s Super Taikyu endurance series, company management recognizes the marketing and R&D importance of going racing.

This doesn’t make it an automatic sell with the executives, but they do “understand it and appreciate it,” Fousekis says.

In addition to Formula Drift, Falken is also in American Le Mans Series for its second season. Last year the company sponsored a privateer team. This year they’ve brought the program in-house for an abbreviated three-race schedule with a Porsche 911 RS-R in preparation for a full season in 2010.

“Formula D is definitely growing,” Fousekis adds. “It’s not just that core group of tuners anymore. That’ll help continue its growth, the way it’s been going. And bang for the buck—the exposure, the TV program, the fan base that turns out for each event—it’s still a fairly affordable series to get some great marketing opportunities.”

Jim Liaw, founder and president of Formula D, knows that it’s natural for companies to buckle down and cut budgets. He’s seen a former major sponsor, Circuit City, file for Chapter 11 and watched other endemic companies scale back sponsorships.

But he’s confident that his series delivers an audience uniquely receptive to performance brands.

“Even with some of our endemic companies that have pulled back, they’re not pulling out,” Liaw says. “They know they need to keep at least one foot in the door and not completely disappear from the scene.”

And some sponsors, like Falken and NOS Energy Drink, have increased their commitment to the series.

“We’re reaching an audience that most motorsports and events are not reaching,” he says. “It’s more targeted, a quality audience, and a younger audience that [companies] are building a brand with. What we lose to [larger race series], we gain in uniqueness of audience.”

It’s an audience that guys like Fousekis are eager to reach. And he believes his fellow marketers need to play a collective part in reaching this group, supporting these events, to help pull out of the economic spin.

“Now is the time that everyone in this industry needs to help continue growth and reignite things, whether that’s doing more motorsports activities or getting grassroots proactive, doing small meets. We need to keep the interest there. Otherwise it may be a different world five, 10 years down the road.”

Formula DRIFT Round 4: All In took place last weekend in a very hot Las Vegas. Temps reached over 100 and even warmer on-track, but despite the weather the show must go on. Here is a short re-cap from my point of view.

On the way to Vegas with Em we briefly met with the Meister watch dudes to pick up some timepieces for the event. Meister is now the official timekeeper of FD so be on the look out for more. Each podium winner for the rest of the season will not receive a watch courtesy of Meister. They also graciously donated a watch for the Formula D Charity Blackjack Tournament (more on this later.)

Thanks for the hook-up…the non-Fatlace all black Meister “Super Star”

The “Super Star” is super comfy and has tons of tiny details that separate this watch from the rest. I actually had a few people randomly ask what I was wearing.

After arriving to the Aliante, the official hotel of Formula D Round 4. This spot is dope and I’m not just saying that cause I worked out the partnership. It’s super clean, modern, and has all the amenities you could want, while avoiding the craziness of the “Strip”.

After a long night gambling with the guys…I got up really early for Vegas time (actually a time when some go to bed) at 5:30 am. Picked up Darren McNamara and met with another FD driver Chris Forsberg at Hot 97.5 radio station for an on-air morning show interview to promote the event.

Later that same day headed to the track to set-up a photoshoot with Super Street, the new Miss FD, Miki Taka, and Driver Ross Petty with with Garage Boso Nissan S15. This car is one of best cars out there and Ross is just a crazy dude. Him and his crew are like wild animals and just have fun and do what they want…pretty much how drifting and anything in general should be.

Then it was right into media ride alongs. Ride alongs can sometimes be a pain as you need to prep the riders, find drivers willing to participate, have waivers signed, make sure the helmet fits, and clear it with the track for safety. But this sunset was worth the workload.

Later that night we held the first annual Formula DRIFT Charity Blackjack tournament…more on that later (I promise.) Friday morning was time to get to real work and was spent at the track for practice, qualifying, and driver autographs. I really appreciate that the driver’s take the time to meet and greet with fans in the heat. One fan in particular stood out as he custom designed and colored a pair of Vans into the Falken color scheme. Super sick…I should of gotten his contact info so I can have some custom kicks done up.

Main event Saturday went very well. It was a very long day…got up at 10 am to be at the track by 2 for my media briefing. My main event day usually is packed with the media briefing, setting up the media center in this case 2 media centers, setting up media interviews, then live blogging on the FD blog, live round by round Tweets for the FD Twitter, setting up the podium to make sure the media and Jose get their shots, then my work day doesn’t end until I have the standings, results, and press release completed. Thankfully, I had great help all weekend with Emily and Jose as always.

I even was able to get Jarod some love. Interview with Wealth TV…stay tuned.

Matt Powers Fan Club

One thing that I was bummed out about the weekend was that it was the same weekend as UFC 100. But luckily the boys at Toyo Tires had it ordered at their booth. So once the half-time event started I quickly made my way to watch it. I came just in time to see Dan Henderson KO Bisping in dramatic fashion…perfect timing. Half-time ended just as Brock Lesnar demolished Frank Mir and had the ref call the fight. I must have some good karma points…although I wasn’t able to bet on the fights.

Left the track with Jose (trooper for sure) at 3am…let loose with some blackjack until breakfast time. Short nap til the Pool Party (only downside of setting events like this up are that you have to be there on time).

The Garage Boso dudes “Get Silly!”

It’s been a hectic last couple of days out here in Las Vegas. From setting up activities at the Aliante Hotel and Casino the official hotel of FD Round 4, including the charity blackjack tournament, to the competition at the track.

Thursday got off to a very early start (after gambling all evening into the AM) with an in-studio radio interview for Formula DRIFT drivers points leader Darren McNamara and 3rd place in points Chris Forsberg for Hot 97. The drivers did their thing and the promo proved to work with extra tickets being sold.

The PR game continues and in yesterday’s and today’s Las Vegas Review Journal are two great articles. One features Ross Petty and the other on Tyler McQuarrie.
