Lopez Restaurante Y Cantina

After checking out the Monterey Aquarium a few weeks ago, the plan was to have some Mexican food. There were a few spots at the Row, but Yelp said that the best one was off the main strip called Lopez Restaurante y Cantina. It was a 5 minute drive, but worth it. I didn’t expect to taste some authentic tasting Mexican food at Monterey. A few years ago I got a taste of my friend’s mom’s homemade enchiladas. They were the best enchiladas I’ve ever tasted. This restaurant comes close. If anyone knows somewhere in SF where I can get this kind of flavor let me know. We had a stack of Nachos, Chile Relleno and a Chicken Enchilada. I’m coming back to try out some other dishes for sure.

Call Fail, AT&T and iPhone

I don’t ask for much. Just want my phone to be able to make calls… one of the most basic functions of a “phone”. I used to be with Verizon. Yes, dropped calls happened and every carrier has dead zones. My dropped call count was about 2-3 a month with Verizon. Switched to AT&T for the iPhone, now my dropped calls are 2-3 a day. 3G is rarely available in the middle of the city and we don’t have SMS, a feature my candy bar phone had at 2000. I’m not sure how AT&T will be able to keep it’s customers. The iPhone isn’t enough for me to stay after my two year contract is up. I always wanted an iTouch. Now I have one that can sometimes make phone calls.

Trix’s Birthday Brunch at Circa

A few months ago Trix had a birthday brunch at Circa in the city. After ordering food, we started off with a round of Remy shots. Then I ordered a beer… with breakfast food? I thought that was weird after making the request. The ladies all took advantage of the bottomless mimosas. The entree was pretty good! For dessert, we had cupcakes from Sweet Dreams. Trix swears by that bakery! Gotta admit, they were pretty tasty. You should eat at Circa if you want to have breakfast and some drinks!

I rocked my Puma mesh and Jay happened to have on some Gucci colorway Pumas w/ gum soles.

Shanghai Dumpling House

If you’re ever at SFO, you’re near some good dumplings. Shanghai Dumpling House is a casual restaurant at Millbrae. According to a reliable source (Mr. Kwok), it’s one of the few places in the SF area that make the dumplings with the soup inside. There’s a technique to eat these things, I’ll need to show you in person one of these days.

We order the same thing all the time… two orders of dumplings, garlic string beans and some noodles.

Elepahant Bar is Up to Par

Elephant Bar is OK… not the best but definitely not the worst place to eat. Started off with Quick Seared Ahi Tuna with Ponzu and Sweet Potato Fries. For the entrée I usually get the Macadamia Nut Crusted Fish and Chips (be sure to get the sauce) w/ a Stella Artois, but today I decided to get Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi. Guess I’m hella down w/ their Macadamias, huh. I think it’s the sauce. For dessert get the Ice Cream Mud Pie. With that combo of flavor you can’t lose. Customer service is pretty good too; nice staff and managers. It’s also cool to order the same thing as take out. Adds another dimension to movie night at the house, especially when you have a newborn.

The Darkside of North Beach and Bocce Cafe

On Father’s day Mara said “What do you want to do? I’m driving!” I thought it was a good day to go to North Beach with the fam. On the way there I was able to take photos of things that usually catch my eye, but can’t shoot since I’m usually driving. (like an AE86 and Ferrari) We were lucky and found parking on Powell. Darkside Initiative was our first stop. The staff here is probably one of the friendliest and knowledgeable in the City. Not to mention they have a Tier 0 account! Colin was there and we chatted for a few minutes about Lost and the dope Disney toys he has in the shop.

Feeling a bit hungry, we ventured into the crowded restaurant filled streets of North Beach. It was sunny and this meant that tons of people were out. Restaurants were packed and it was tough to maneuver the stroller around some of the people eating outdoors. There was no room for a stroller in any of the restaurants on the main strip, so we decided to go to Bocce Cafe which is a few blocks from all the madness. Not many tourists go there. I ordered a Filet Mignon and Mara had Ravioli. The food there is always good! If you go there at night, they have live jazz playing. When it was dessert time, Aiden let us know he was ready to go home, haha. We ended up getting a pint of mint chip at Baskin Robbins on the way home.

Smarties Candy (UK version), 50mm test photo

My friend Julian, who just got back from his trip to the UK and France, was kind enough to give me a small box of some Smarties. Not to be mistaken with the infamous USDM wafer discs… these look like M&M’s but have a thicker shell. The chocolate also tastes a little more smoother and richer. I’d pick these over a pack of plain M&M’s, not because it isn’t sold in the US, but because it tastes better.

Here’s a photo I took w/ my new 50mm lens. I got it for the shallow depth of field.

If you know where to get Green Tea Kit Kat’s, let me know! (and don’t say Japan you smartie!)

Ip Man Movie Review

Ip man was Bruce Lee’s master. If you’ve seen the power of the one inch punch and the wooden dummy, they are both part of the Wing Chun system. This movie is like most Kung Fu flicks with defending honor, bad guys and people claiming “My Kung Fu is better than your Kung Fu!” Ip Man’s was the best.

Watch this movie. The fight scenes are awesome. It all looks like realistic action with occasional people getting kicked across the screen, haha. The story is cool. It’s semi-biographical and based on Ip Man’s life. I don’t know how much of it was made up, but it makes a good story… I give it a thumbs up!

Jacked Takeout and Edwin Chop Sticks to the Rescue

Ever since Tivo and Hulu, I never watch TV when anything airs live. A few weeks ago we had Fringe night. Mara and Trix ordered Japanese at the closest place, Kamemishi House. The food is OK, it’s just one of the closest places to get our fix. This time the food was bad and they forgot to include chop sticks!

We lost about 20 good pairs of chop sticks in the past few months because we used them in baby shower related games. Luckily, I had these Edwin chop sticks that I kept from Magic a few years ago!

I’m probably not eating at Kamemishi House again.

Santana Row, R9, Cupcakin
