November 20, 2009 – 5:11 pm | No Comment | submitted by turd

in a perfect alignment of the musical stars, two of my friends’ bands are playing tonight in brooklyn – Bear in Heaven and Tanlines. they’ve both been getting crazy good press and played some of the best showcases during CMJ a couple months ago. people are generally stoked and i’m super excited that they’re getting the recognition. in fact, check out this video review of ‘bear in heaven’ from pitchfork on abcnews, with charles gibson tripping over the album name – gold.

Pankabestia * opens Fri Nov 20
November 16, 2009 – 9:45 pm | No Comment | submitted by turd

picture venice. picture the wake-choppy waters of the never calm canals. now picture tall masts of hand-constructed sprawling impossibly floating structures emerging from the distance, coming into view like mad max on the water. venetians coming out of their alleyway houses to wonder at what was sailing towards them. it is the serenissima armada — and what i would have given to be there to see it myself….

Pankabestia: Punk Beasts of the Swimming Cities of Serenissima

“Pankabestia”- what the Italian villagers called us when we floated into town on our junk rafts. It translates to “punk beasts”, and by all accounts we were – magical, grubby, unruly creatures carrying out an enchanted mythical scene, looking like bits of broken dreams, drifting.
- Curator Spy Emerson

Pankabestia: Punk Beasts of the Swimming Cities of Serenissima, is a retrospective of artist Swoon’s “Swimming Cities of Serenissima”, the artist’s recent invasion of the Venice Biennale. Traveling from the Karst region of Slovenia to Venice, Italy, Swoon and more than 30 other artists braved the waters of the Adriatic Sea and navigated a fleet of three intricately hand crafted vessels. The exhibition will include large-scale wall drawings, original Swimming Cities boat installations, portions of the ships, found objects acquired from sea. The exhibition will also feature performers Gatto Morto, Adina Kennedy and Adina Bier, beautiful photographic documentation from artist Tod Seelie, and original artwork from Swoon, Monica Canilao, Spy Emerson, plus many more.

Opening reception: November 20, 6-9 PM
@ ANONYMOUS GALLERY at COLLECTIVE HARDWARE: 169  Bowery
