bike shorts + los marcos polos
September 22, 2009 – 1:01 am | Comments Off | submitted by turd

get rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrready!! my ubertalented friend ken has since recovered from his cross-country bike tour and is back in ny putting together various fun bike events.

firstly, it’s the return of BIKE SHORTS – a seasonal screening of user-submitted short films related to the bicycle. every screening, the crowd fave wins $100 (real benjamin!) and some gear. the next one is on sunday, september 27 at public assembly in the ‘burg.

and in a few weeks he’ll be throwing the 3rd (?) annual LOS MARCOS POLOS bike polo tournament — where anything goes and pretty much so do all the clothes. * pause * i think that ryhmed. in any case, it’s gonna be a blast and as much a spectator sport as a playing one. so come by “the pit” in LES and watch the antics and hijinks fly. and this poster is pretty fkn badass.

ready to rumblerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrs!!!
August 31, 2009 – 11:52 pm | 2 Comments | submitted by turd

the rumblers hold an annual car show under the BQE and it’s always a blast to check out the hot rods and the hot rides (oh, and the tattooed hotties aren’t bad to look at either).
i met up with trevor & his new pup lady.

her and dixie mud wrestled in the doggie park. don’t they make a nice pair?

burnout!! (XL!… does anyone remember wipeout xl, the playstation game? one of the first really dope techno/dance game soundtracks)

i really only ride bicycles and don’t have the first clue about cars (in fact, i don’t even know how to DRIVE — gasp!), so all i could do was ooh & aah over the pretty paint jobs, curvy shapes and fun lil doodads. this is my attemp at appeasing the car junkies out there in fatlace land. please feel free to explain what the hell i’m looking at. danke.

[ funny moment interlude ] this kid was NOT amused

she was engrossed

and the bikes… this bike didn’t really make sense but i kinda want it!!

could’ve been mine for only $75.. i was really considering it

summer will never die!
August 22, 2009 – 11:28 pm | One Comment | submitted by turd

a couple wednesdays ago i got to see bat for lashes! i’ve basically been listening to her last record ‘two suns’ nonstop for the summer. it’s a great soundtrack to bike to, especially at night when the streets are empty and dark.

she wore a unitard and a cape of hair wings

even tho my friend missed the show (boo!), i was able to meet up with amanda and her beautiful friends jess and d

and at the end of the show all i wanted to do was howl at the moon. ah-oooooooooowowowowoooooo!

after a few years of epic crazy birthday parties, this year radshaw decided to celebrate at the levee.

sai baked a pie (yes, that rhymes.)

toni & radshaw – i heart forever!! toni just got married, too – congratulations!!

of course, radshaw looked hot. this is like a doily blanket caftan coverup

luke with more work on his leg half sleeve

we eventually got kicked out and ended our night at union (cess)pool – where else? radshaw on max pask + brian

an old pal of mine from high school was to be married last weekend in new paltz. coincidentally, a couple of friends from college happened to have a couple pieces up at the wassaic project – a festival of art and music. so i hopped in a car with my friend rich and got the hell out of manhattan.

the wasaic project is housed on the grounds of the old maxon mills. the millhouse itself is quite dramatic.. and reminded me of a family of penguins.

wandering through the millhouse was like being inside a big multi-level treehouse, with lots of interesting surface textures and artifacts.

megan and clement

the art was actually very mature. a lot was site-specific, some alluded to the area.

there was a swing

there was a pair of nuts hanging from a hatchback

there was a multi-paged ‘book’ full of apothecary vials and samples of things

the watering hole for people (sign by meg & clement)

like school assemblies..

.. but steeper

[ family interlude ] 9 year old me + my brother as a ninja turtle

kevin and megan’s wedding was beautiful and fun – almost as much as the two of them! here’s kevin, a guy i’ve known since we were 12. crazy. check the lining son – now that’s pimp

the hunter crew

how friggin gorgeous is meg?

meg’s father officiated

kevin’s mother gave them her blessing

kevin’s grandmother (?) read a bob dylan song

be careful with summer weddings – your fingers can swell up you know!

congratulations!!

TIME TO PARTY!! the boys (judd, new papa gabe, wolfe, rich) + me

which one of these is not like the others?

let them eat cake

kevin’s dad’s leg cast matched perfectly with his knee-high

it was a beautiful day

kids on the dancefloor are the dope show

so are kay & me on the dance flo’

so are the newlyweds

rich with my can of condensed milk (don’t ask)

after the party it’s the hotel lobby room and hallway (btw, i do not remember this part of the evening nor do i remember eating an apple… or where it came from)

good night, friends. it was a blast and a half. til next time!!

auspicious august
August 11, 2009 – 6:53 pm | Comments Off | submitted by turd

this summer has been a bit… well, odd. maybe it’s cuz i’m 30? maybe cuz this world is just getting stranger the closer we get to the year 2012? in any case, the only that i can count on is that we all keep getting older and simply have to enjoy everything that comes our way everyday.

on that note, i’d like to wish a fine and fond farewell to andy kessler, who passed away too soon yesterday. i’ve only run into the man a few times in my life but i will remember his amazing kindness and generosity – as well as being a fkn rad dude who managed to be a standup guy in his industry and a great representative of the skateboarding world.

also, be sure to go watch deathbowl to downtown

SPOTTED: a to-die-for kinfolk locked up on north 6th and bedford. i had never heard of this maker before but this perfectly built beauty certainly made me take notice. and i snapped some pix – puuurdeeeeeeeeeeeee….

SEEN: mccarren park on a saturday afternoon. what i wanted to shout across the path: “BOY!! i said, BOY – put some PANTS on… YOUR LEGS, BOY! put the PANTS on your LEEGGGGGGSSS. wassamattawitchoooooo?!?!” but i stayed quiet.
P1020151

MAYBE?: just maybe could i really step correct in these gaultier extra-waisted pin striped pants? [ note: not high, but MORE waisted ] this pair of zootiness could make my janet jackson in the “alright” video dreams come true rhythm nation was an amazing record, just for the record). i’m not a bad tapper, you know.

BACK!! pablo’s finally back in the city after being caught up in virginia too long. i saw him at the base of the williamsburg bridge while i was on my way to work and he was on his long-awaited trip to the beach. pablo’s seen here with “dr. smith,” who offers messengers a quick tune-up during the day. he’s also on call so if you ever need an emergency wrench, just call him up: 347-525-2689

GROWING: bunches upon bunches of fresh grapes on a trellis on devoe street. they looked so good i wanted to reach up and chomp on them this morning!

BIRTHDAY BOY: last thursday was dan’s birthday and he invited zak and me to celebrate at the waterfront crabhouse in long island city. as i’m a huge deadliest catch fan and an even bigger seafood fanatic, i was super psyched about it.

the place is a riot. when you walk in you’re greeted by an old school diver suit and a tub full of peanuts:

armed & dangerous

it got a little messy. zak even managed to stab himself in the face with a claw and bled everywhere.
dan's crabhouse birthday

happy birthday, dan!!

BIRTHDAY GIRL: the next night, i helped arrange a surprise dinner at rye for megan’s 30th birthday, one of my best friends from college. megan cracks me up and is a super talented architect turned graphic designer. she’s got one more year left in her MFA from RISD. a typical megan expression:

meg and clement – they JUST told me that they’ve been engaged for a few years already. thx, slackers.

megan and her older sister sarah (left) are dead ringers, it’s a lil disconcerting

KUNG FU KID: zak was asked to do a demonstration of wing tsun at rooftop films, as they were screening a silent kung fu flick called “red heroine” with live accompaniment at the automotive school in mccarren park. PLUG: zak teaches class every Mon, Tue and Wed over at 3 kings tattoo (owner matty and alex are current students) – for more info check out empire city self defense. here’s some of the crew:

they had mini colt 45s! cheers, billy dee

finally check out prolly’s peel sessions after a long hiatus, where prolly promptly broke some sh*t.

boys under the bridge

darryl blew my mind – he’s R.A.D.

[ work interlude ] our chief curator gave us a sneak of this three dimensional mandala before it was completely assembled. once the roof goes on top you won’t be able to view the interior so i snuck a couple shots with my phone. it’s absolutely stunning.

[ eek ] this was buzzing around my apt yesterday. it has 2 wings and just 5 legs — does anyone know what the eff it is?!
