this summer has been a bit… well, odd. maybe it’s cuz i’m 30? maybe cuz this world is just getting stranger the closer we get to the year 2012? in any case, the only that i can count on is that we all keep getting older and simply have to enjoy everything that comes our way everyday.
on that note, i’d like to wish a fine and fond farewell to andy kessler, who passed away too soon yesterday. i’ve only run into the man a few times in my life but i will remember his amazing kindness and generosity – as well as being a fkn rad dude who managed to be a standup guy in his industry and a great representative of the skateboarding world.
also, be sure to go watch deathbowl to downtown
SPOTTED: a to-die-for
kinfolk locked up on north 6th and bedford. i had never heard of this maker before but this perfectly built beauty certainly made me take notice. and i snapped some pix – puuurdeeeeeeeeeeeee….

SEEN: mccarren park on a saturday afternoon. what i wanted to shout across the path: “BOY!! i said, BOY – put some PANTS on… YOUR LEGS, BOY! put the PANTS on your LEEGGGGGGSSS. wassamattawitchoooooo?!?!” but i stayed quiet.

MAYBE?: just maybe could i really step correct in these gaultier extra-waisted pin striped pants? [ note: not high, but MORE waisted ] this pair of zootiness could make my janet jackson in the “alright” video dreams come true rhythm nation was an amazing record, just for the record). i’m not a bad tapper, you know.

BACK!! pablo’s finally back in the city after being caught up in virginia too long. i saw him at the base of the williamsburg bridge while i was on my way to work and he was on his long-awaited trip to the beach. pablo’s seen here with “dr. smith,” who offers messengers a quick tune-up during the day. he’s also on call so if you ever need an emergency wrench, just call him up: 347-525-2689

GROWING: bunches upon bunches of fresh grapes on a trellis on devoe street. they looked so good i wanted to reach up and chomp on them this morning!

BIRTHDAY BOY: last thursday was dan’s birthday and he invited zak and me to celebrate at the waterfront crabhouse in long island city. as i’m a huge deadliest catch fan and an even bigger seafood fanatic, i was super psyched about it.
the place is a riot. when you walk in you’re greeted by an old school diver suit and a tub full of peanuts:

crab to my left

crab to my right

armed & dangerous

dan’s girlfriend tamara reaches for more

it got a little messy. zak even managed to stab himself in the face with a claw and bled everywhere.

happy birthday, dan!!

BIRTHDAY GIRL: the next night, i helped arrange a surprise dinner at rye for megan’s 30th birthday, one of my best friends from college. megan cracks me up and is a super talented architect turned graphic designer. she’s got one more year left in her MFA from RISD. a typical megan expression:

meg and clement – they JUST told me that they’ve been engaged for a few years already. thx, slackers.

megan and her older sister sarah (left) are dead ringers, it’s a lil disconcerting

KUNG FU KID: zak was asked to do a demonstration of wing tsun at rooftop films, as they were screening a silent kung fu flick called “red heroine” with live accompaniment at the automotive school in mccarren park. PLUG: zak teaches class every Mon, Tue and Wed over at 3 kings tattoo (owner matty and alex are current students) – for more info check out empire city self defense. here’s some of the crew:
