in need of a new camera

**Editor’s note: read Mark’s comment below HEHEHEHE**

i’ve had my panasonic lumix (thanks to mark!) for the past couple of years and it has lasted me well!

other than the fact i dropped it in the lake and it miraculously survived the bike accident with me -  i’ve been having to switch off from using mine to the bf’s newer panasonic lumix.

the one thing i dislike about this camera is the lighting/iso features. it sucks at taking “dim” shots unless you have a steady hand and can hold it still while you have your iso setting super slow. not the best for when you’re trying to take some quick shots when its cloudy out… and i HATE using flash. even with the “auto” setting for flash, the pics usually come out too bright and washes everything out, so then you’d have to go back in and adjust the exposure.

also – it says its fast, but really, i don’t think its that fast (unless i select a scene mode: perhaps sports would work BUT i’d still have to mess with the settings especially since flash won’t work and if i’m trying to shoot some skate sessions at dusk – no bueno).

however, i DO love the wide angle feature as well as a lot of the scene modes. its also pretty sleek and compact, so i can always stick it in my pocket or take sneak attack photos while no one is looking =) and HELLOOOOO – it was a gift one of the best gifts EVER! (except for the shamwow the bf gave me for my bday last year)

scene modes include:

  • Soft Skin (haven’t used yet)
  • Sports (good, but don’t use with flash, sucks if its a night sport)
  • Night Portrait (you need a steady hand or tripod)
  • Night Scenery (you need a steady hand or tripod)
  • Self Portrait (have yet to try)
  • Party (pretty good)
  • Candle (awesome)
  • Fireworks (i’ve tried, no bueno, too dark)
  • Starry Sky (hmmm not really – tested but need a steady hand)
  • Beach (this works good)
  • Snow (but you’ll need to adjust your exposure)
  • Baby 1 & 2 (haven’t tried these out yet)
  • Underwater (i don’t think this is meant to go UNDER water)
  • Sunset (but you need to keep you hand real steady or use a tripod)
  • Pet (not if you’re pet is moving too fast lol)

with all that said, timmy told me i should get the canon powershot s90:

the main reasons i am a bit hesitant are because of the following:

  • out of my price range (closer to the $400 – $500 mark)
  • that’s a ton of settings i’ll need to learn
  • i don’t want to provide bad photos with an awesome camera (this is more of a confidence issue lol)

i used to use an SLR (not digital) back in my high school years, and i have to admit, i was pretty damn good at it! but that was years ago and my love for photography just wasn’t the same… that is, until i moved to ny.

i’ve been wanting a dslr for the longest time, but i can’t afford that shit, so i had to compromise and use a point and shoot. and there’s nothing wrong with that either! i’m always mobile, so having a compact digi cam is the best way to go.

i WAS about to just get the canon powershot SD780 IS for about $250, but then after talking to the bf, he said “you take a lot of photos and you use your camera everyday, so why not splurge for a better one?”

then i thought, you know what, he’s right! i DO deserve a better newer camera damnit! (if you know me, you know that my camera is ALWAYS in my purse and can come out at any given moment – but usually i miss the moment because my camera is too slow womp womp).

so i think i’ll have to save up for this – check out some of the features of the canon powershot s90:

  • Lens Control Ring (schweet!)
  • 10 million pixels sensor (whoa)
  • RAW shooting (awesome i think?)
  • Fast f/2.0-4.9 maximum aperture range (NEED for speeeeed!)
  • Lens covering the classic 28-105mm range (nice)
  • Dual Anti-Noise System (high sensitivity sensor and Digic 4 noise reduction) (less noise the better!)
  • 3.0 inch PureColor II LCD (yay!)
  • Optical Image Stabilization (YESSSS)
  • Low Light mode (YES need this)
  • DIGIC 4 image processor (dunno what this means but OK!)
  • HD output (easy peasy)

I just saw the S90 yesterday and as far as build is concerned, it is solid for something so small. If you drop it, I am sure it might get a ding or so but it will be straight. As far as picture, you still will get some fuzziness cause after all, it is a p&s not a DLSR. It’s about the lenses. I had a Canon G9 which should take better pics then the S90 but still took many crappy/blurry shots. But this should be an upgrade from the Lumix…..so i would have to agree for size and power, that is the best camera for you.

  • Al "Mofo" Lagura says:

hey mark did you order two? HA!

whenever my lumix dies or gets lost (whichever comes first!) i was gonna go for this one – it’s basically the G9 made petite. great for us!
