When the Nike ACG teaser video hit the Interwebz I was like cool, ACG is back. But when Errolson Hugh reposted the same video with nothing more than vague hints of his involvement, I was stoked! For the uninitiated, Hugh is the co-founder of the tech-apparel brand Acronym, the rad dude with all the martial arts moves, a dope designer, and a fellow Chinese Canadian!
So what does that all mean? Well today, Nike announced the resurgence of the ACG sub-brand as NikeLab ACG. Gone are the days of the earthy/hiking-oriented aesthetics and in its place is a new direction which really represents the “All-Conditions-Gear” acronym (no-pun intended) more suitably for today. What you get is several releases from the Hugh-consulted effort in the form of a 2-in-1 Jacket, tee, tech fleece pant, funnel sweater, backpack, boot and a ruggedized flyknit chukka. All of the products feature nice ACR-influenced touches like taped seams, water-repellant materials, innovative zipper-systems, hidden pockets and a tasteful silhouette to represent the tech ninja within.
I’ve always wanted a collaboration effort between these two powerhouses but I never envisioned it under the ACG moniker. If you’ve followed Nike, most of their “tech” efforts fell suitably within the NSW sub-brand. My guess is the commercialization of the NSW tech-fleece silhouette, most notably the sportswear tech fleece pants, has proven to Nike that a bolder collaboration with Hugh’s all-tech or nothing approach warranted an effort. Whatever the reason, this is good news for Nike and Acronym fans. Peep the entire collection here. It all drops on December 18th, don’t sleep.
