It was an old school kinda weekend.  And if you don’t know…old school=the ONLY school…hands down, no arguments, I win.  And if you disagree that’s when ya lost, ha!

Saturday night I hit the New Edition concert at the Oracle Arena in Oakland.  And if you too were raised on Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph and Johnny, seeing them together again was not an option.  It was mandatory.  The grown folks came out (some in full regalia) ready to party like it was 1988.  Pre-show had the DJ gettin the crowd motivated with some rap-a-longs and dance battles in the audience had me seeing the cabbage patch, running man, the wop, snake, reebok, roger rabbit and more.  It took my Kid ‘n Play heart away.  At one point I swore I had an MC Hammer sighting, cuz dude was just too legit to quit, turnin the mutha out!

Tony! Toni! Tone! was the opening act and much respect to the hometown heroes Raphael Saadiq and Dwayne Wiggins…but they were a little (and by little I really mean BIG TIME) off.  If you were there you know what I mean.  But thankfully, New Edition came correct and soothed the BOOing crowd.  With their matching suits and synchronized dancing in typical New Edition style, the long two-hour set included hits Candy Girl, Mr. Telephone Man, Can You Stand The Rain, Johnny’s My My My, Ralph’s Sensitivity, BBD’s Do Me and Poison and Bobby’s My Prerogative and Tenderoni. Speaking of Bobby, he definitely sipped on that slurricane.  Cuz in not-so-typical New Edition style, he was in his own world, not quite in step with the others and late to his own party.  But then any other Bobby just wouldn’t be the (self proclaimed) Bad Ass Bobby Brown we know and love.  Am I right folks?

Sunday, I topped it off at the Alameda County Fair with Salt n Pepa!  The first ladies of hip hop are STILL pushin it.  That’s real hip hop and I’m a fan, for life.

But first, had to get in that good Bay Area food…Burma Superstar…which had me singin  “There’s a party in my tummy! Yes there’s a party in my tummy!“
