It’s no secret that I absolutely love watching movies, I mean c’mon I gave up cable but I can’t let go of my Netflix! There is just something about sitting down for 2hours to escape the daily troubles of life through a great movie. I just couldn’t imagine life without great film.
One of my preferred filmmakers is Woody Allen, I’ve always had a thing for his quirky and neurotic story-lines. Well, last night I was finally able to sit down to watch one of his more recent films, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” starring Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem.
The movie tells the story of two best friends, Vicky and Cristina, who travel to Barcelona for the summer and upon their arrival meet a very charming artist, Juan Antonio. Despite Vicky’s upcoming wedding, and Juan Antonio’s mentally unstable ex-wife, both women become captivated by him throwing themselves into a psychotic love triangle.
Now, I remember seeing the trailer for this film and being beyond excited to see it, but now I’d like those hours of my life back. Throughout the entire film it seemed as though all the characters were just completely over done. They were over the top moody, desperate, and negative. I think there is actually a quote from the film in which Scarlett’s character Cristina says “I don’t know about making love because I am just so moody”. Who says that?
Perhaps it’s the feminist in me, but I’m just so tired of watching films portraying women to be these overly neurotic desperate beings. I mean Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) is a good looking man, but three women (including a married one) all fighting over him? Not only are they fighting but Penelope Cruz’s character Maria Elena attempts suicide and murder because of her passionate love for Juan Antonio. I just found the plot line to be so over the top cliche and dragged on for way too long. Ah well. . . I can’t love them all.
Have you seen the film ? Did you love or hate it? What are some great films you’ve seen as of recent?
IN MY TOP TEN . . . . .
